The Barrister's Ball, as you were told by some of the 2Ls and 3Ls who came to talk to your class about student organizations during orientation week, was kind of like prom for law students. When you heard that, part of your heart lifted. Back then, you didn't know Andy was engaged, and you had had hope that maybe he would ask you to go with him. That you could have a redo of your senior prom because that shit ended horribly for you. You spent more time in the bathroom crying because your boyfriend was cheating on you with your best friend than actually having fun.
Now, you were convinced that it would just be another repeat of your senior prom. You hadn't intended on even going after the horror of everything that happened over winter break and its aftermath. But, one night during midterms, when you stayed late at the library to study, Andy snuck into the study room you booked and begged you to come. And, god, you just couldn't say no to those pretty blue eyes. Like a fool, you agreed.
So, there you were, standing in your purple dress, watching as Andy and Laurie came in. You figured that she would be coming, but it still hurt to see her have everything that you had wanted. Worse, she deserved it more than you. She had Andy long before you even knew who he was. You had no right to act like you had any sort of claim on him. And yet, you couldn't help but imagine what it would be like if you could be the woman on his arm.
Barrister's began with a dinner, and part of you hoped that Andy and Laurie weren't going to be seated with you. You didn't know if you could stand it if you had to watch them be a happy couple right in front of you. Your luck, though, had seemed to run out. Because they were approaching the table you were at. And you knew that there was no way to get out of this.
"Y/N!" Andy said, smiling when he saw you. He held his arms out for a hug, and you stood, leaning into him, pulling away quickly, unsure of how long a hug should last when you were trying to not draw attention to the fact you were sleeping with a married man. "You look incredible!"
"I wish I could say the same about you. You look like you're going to your first high school dance," you teased. "You should consider growing out a beard. Would really make you look more mature."
"I tell him the same thing," Laurie said. You had forgotten she was there for a moment. "I'm Laurie, by the way."
"Oh, hello! It's so nice to meet you finally." You prayed you didn't look as uncomfortable as you felt. "Andy's told me so much about you!"
Except he hadn't. He never really talked to you about Laurie. Neither before his marriage or after. It was almost like he was still hiding that part of you from him. If he didn't say anything, then maybe you would forget. You probably never could. He had no idea how heavily it weighed on you, what you were doing.
"All good things I hope," she said.
"Actually, he's told everyone how you have active warrants out for your arrest in thirteen states." You paused. "Kidding! He speaks so highly of you. You're so lucky to have such an adoring husband."
