Chapter 19 - New Beginnings

The patty sizzled on an oily pan.

Xingqiu hummed (off tune) to himself as he shifted the pan around the stove. He wasn't exactly sure what he was doing, but famous chefs always moved the pans around on the grill, so he assumed he was at least doing something right. He sprinkled in a few pinches of sugar and salt here and there, until a thin, bubbling film coated the contents of the pan like melting snow. Xingqiu studied the dish (from which an odd smell was emanating from), then nodded approvingly.

In the other room, Chongyun stirred, rubbing his eyes. It was already 1 pm, he noted sleepily. Luckily, he didn't have any classes in the morning today.

He padded outside into the living room and slumped onto the couch, picking up the remote and flipping through a few channels.

"Yunyun! Brunch's ready!" Xingqiu piped up, singsongingly. "Guess what I made,"

"Noodles?" Chongyun stretched, yawning.

"Nope! Patties with toast and cheese!" Xingqiu smiled, reaching into the refrigerator and taking out a small bundle of cheese.

"What? Uh, alright... give it here..."

A megawatt smile plastered on his face, Xingqiu passed the dish over.

"It smells weird... are you sure about this, Qiuqiu?"

"Eat up, Yun! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!" He smiled so hard it looked like it hurt. "As they say, 早餐吃好，午餐吃饱，晚餐吃少. Good breakfast, full lunch, small dinner!' Yeah?"

"Oh, uh... okay.."

He barfed.

Eula drummed her fingers on her lap, glancing again at her watch. She hadn't blinked in a while, and her eyes were starting to water and hurt. She screwed them shut and rubbed them.

"Eula?" A familiar voice spoke and Eula's heart pumped out of her chest. Amber looked so pale, she reminded Eula of a delicate Cecilia folding in on itself.

"Amber! Are you even real?" Eula pinched herself. "Sorry, it's been a long night."

"Eula... you didn't have to..." Amber spoke, her frame, now looking thinner than ever, shook. "Especially after what I did."

"It doesn't matter, Amber. It doesn't matter."

"Yes it does, Eula! I ruined everything, because I was scared! Now we can't be together, and it's all my fault. I'm sorry. I really like you, it's just-

"Who said that? I still like you, Amber. Like, a lot."

"Don't give me hope, Eula. Why would you want to be with me? You could do so much better."

"Amber! Stop it, please." Eula rubbed her eyes hard. "We can still be together. I understand that you were scared, Amber. It wasn't your fault."

"I just want you to be happy. Really, I just- My only dream is for you to be happy." Amber repeated with more certainty.

"I'm happy when I'm with you, Amber. You light up my world." Eula stood up and walked to the bed. "When I'm with you, the whole world seems to still." She caressed Amber's face. "Please, Amber. Take a chance on me... If your only dream is for me to be happy, then- My only dream is you!"

Amber stared up at the ceiling for what seemed like an eternity before answering: "Yes Eula, I definitely will."

Eula smiled delicately. "To new beginnings."

"To new beginnings."
