Summary:

After all the time he's spent trying to track Wesker down Chris never imagined that he'd be playing right into the man's hands.

Or what Wesker has in store for him.

Months of near fruitless searching had brought Chris to yet another abandoned warehouse somewhere in northern Europe, farther out of the way than any of his previous leads had taken him.

After the incident in Antarctica things had changed. Stopping Umbrella had always been the goal, but after what Claire had been through and the discovery that Wesker was still alive it had become personal. Though maybe it always had been. Wesker's betrayal had been horrifying, but his friends, those that were still alive, had taken all it better than he had.

Since Antarctica he'd been following any lead he could find, more often than not discovering nothing more than long abandoned estates belonging to Umbrella's founders, or disused research labs, stripped clean of any trace of their purpose.

There had been a few that hinted he was onto something though, bits and pieces that Leon had been able to dig up that had taken him to an island lab off the coast of Greece where the buildings, though abandoned, still had power and running water.

Before he'd gotten there the place had been cleaned out in a hurry, or possibly ransacked by someone searching for something, it was hard to tell the difference. Rows of computers had been smashed, filing cabinets pulled open, their contents scattered across the floor.

The place was Umbrella, that much he had been able to glean from the logos on the papers he'd bothered picking up. Mostly expense reports, possibly revealing something significant about the research being done there, but meaningless to him.

After that had been a hairy situation in a warehouse in Italy, the bodies he found still up and walking around. The place had been easy to get into and if he hadn't been the first, could have been ground zero for another Raccoon City. He'd cleared the place, dealing with the zombies and again finding nothing there that was of use to him.

Stopping an outbreak should have felt like more of an accomplishment, but not when he'd been hoping to find more.

Wesker was out there, somewhere, and the not knowing where he was or what he was doing was killing Chris.

Pursuing two rumored Umbrella employees in South America, a pair of men who'd been pretty high up on the corporate end of things had only confirmed what he already knew. Wesker was alive, still active in the bioweapons industry and looking for investors. Neither of them had known anything about Wesker's plans or who else he might have been looking for, just that he'd contacted them about possible work.

Another dead end, but closer than anything prior to that.

The men he'd spoken to had actually spoken to Wesker after everything had gone down. Even if they hadn't been able to tell him anything useful, it still felt like progress.

Then it had been back to Europe were there'd been a frightened lab tech who'd agreed to talk to him, only to turn up dead the day before they'd planned to meet.

Dead under very mysterious circumstances as the body, or a body that was supposedly her, hadn't been found until several days after the woman had been reported dead.

Mutated, or mauled, it was difficult to tell given the quality of the pictures that he managed to get through connections predating his time in STARS, to the point of being unrecognizable, he was willing to believe that it had been his lead and someone had gotten to her before him. Either way, it proved that the story that made it to the papers, that she'd killed herself out of fear of being revealed as an Umbrella employee, was false.
