EJ's pov

I don't know why I did it. I mean we've made out plenty of times. Plenty of times. But this was different. It was more passionate. Needing. We both knew there was something off with us. Maybe that's why we're here. we wanted to forget whatever was going on with us. But for some reason, Gina must've thought that wasn't enough because she stopped kissing me and took a deep breath before speaking.

"Ej...I love you" I know she didn't mean it. She wasn't just my girlfriend, she was also one of my best friends. I could tell when she was lying and this was one of those moments. Even though I knew she was lying, I knew that she still wanted to say it back. but something was keeping me from saying it.

"Gina..." I said remorsefully. I could see the pain on her face but I could also see i smidge of relief.

"It's ok Eej. I feel like we're both looking for something. Anything. to keep us together."

"I still care about it"

"I care about you too. Just not in a romantic way." I could see a single tear leave Gina's eye as she said those words.

"yeah"

"I'll see you at school Caswell." Gina states before giving me a single kiss on the cheek and then leaving my car and going back into the restaurant. 

Gina's Pov

I walked back into the Crown Burger and sat down next to Caleb in the booth. I think they're talking about...Zombies? 

"I'm just saying that anything could happen...and an apocalypse counts as anything," Caleb says confidently

"ok ok so you believe in zombies, but not mermaids?" Kourtney says confused

"yes," Ricky and Caleb say at the same time

"That makes no sense. Help me out here Gina?" Ashlyn said expecting

"I mean the concept of mermaids is unorthodox. Like how do they even breathe? Do they like to get special lungs or do they have gills on their human skin?"

"exactly!" Ricky said triumphantly making me and Caleb laugh.

"Hey, where's Ej?" Ashlyn asks slightly worried. 

"He uh...left"

"What??"

"Why???"

"I don't Know. He just...left. Anyway, can I ride home with you Ash?"

"I'm actually going to stop by Biggie's house and check on him. Can you give her a ride Ricky?"

"yeah uhh...sure"

"thank you so much," Ashlyn said thankfully. After this, we split the check and then went our separate ways.

Ricky's Pov

Gina has been quiet the entire car ride. Really quiet. After I pulled into the driveway of her house we just sat there for a couple of minutes and didn't say anything.

"Are you ok?" I asked concerned

"yeah just some stuff going on"

"do you want to talk about it? "

"Me and Ej broke up"

"oh damn i"m really sorr-"

"and that's not even the bad part. The bad part is that I don't even feel bad. Even though I know I should. I should be heartbroken. but I'm honestly so relieved." she started crying. Hard.

"Hey Hey it's gonna be alright. I promise. I'm here" I said leaning over and hugging her. she must've needed it cause as soon as I hugged her, she broke down.

"thank you, Ricky," she said after releasing from the hug.

"anytime," I said sincerely. For a moment I looked at her lips. Wanted to kiss her soft lips. But that's not what she needs. she needs a friend more than anything and so that's what I'll be. A friend.
