Rikki sits in the corner of Byron's living room. She is accompanied by a huge potted plant that offers some concealment from the crowd. The music is loud, every beat makes the surface of her drink slightly ripple. Everyone is either dancing, drinking or occupied with a conversation or something that involves their mouths but isn't a verbal exchange. In her alcohol filled daze she watches Emma and Ash shamelessly making out on one of the couches. Even after all this time, it still hurts her deeply. She can feel her stomach twisting into a massive knot and she's scared she might throw up.
Why can't Emma just leave Ash and be with me? Why do we have to sneak around behind everyone's back, even our best friend Cleo? Why can't we be together openly?
All of these questions pop up in Rikki's mind and repeat on loop over and over again. She downs her remaining cider and decides to get a refill. She gets up from the floor staggering a little. She has to place a hand on the wall to regain her balance. Maybe she should switch to water. But there's no way she can handle these thoughts occupying her brain so she decides to get that drink despite her better judgment.
Rikki spots Zane next to the punch bowl and nods as a greeting.
"Why the long face, Chadwick?"- asks Zane. After they broke up they avoided each other for a while but they managed to get past the awkward phase and were kind of friends now.
"Not really in a party mood, Benett"
"You look like you could use another drink"
He scoops a couple of ladles of punch into Rikki's red solo cup. She smiles gratefully and wanders back to her spot next to the plant. She sits for a while, lost in torturous thoughts. This isn't working. Focus on something else. She starts listening to the lyrics of the song that's playing.

"Why'd you have to go and make things so complicated?
I see the way you're acting like you're somebody else
Gets me frustrated"

Great. Just great. Why this fucking song? Of course I starts listening when this song starts playing, that's what my luck has been like lately. Rikki normally loves Avril Lavigne, but not this song, not right now. She feels sick. Oh yep, I'm definitely going to be sick.
