I wanted to do something a little different for this month! Instead of a traditional one word prompt, I'm going to present you all with three paintings. After looking at the images, choose one that calls to you and that will be the inspiration for your poem. Pay attention to color, to facial expressions, and dig deep into that captured moment. What sounds do you hear? What's on your mind? Imagine you're really there. We all know that writing, especially poetry or song lyrics, can be interpreted many different ways but visual images can be just as dividing. I have chosen one watercolor painting, one oil painting, and one pastel. When you go to submit your poem, please tell us the piece of artwork you chose.

Our first image is a watercolor painting from 2016 titled, "Place de Diaghilev" by Nadera Benmansour

Our first image is a watercolor painting from 2016 titled, "Place de Diaghilev" by Nadera Benmansour. The most modern painter of our three selections, she was self taught and was inspired by urban life in Paris and other large cities. She arrived in France in 1999 but originated in Algeria. You can also support her work if you enjoy this painting.

This is a pastel piece from 1901 titled, "Mother combing Sara's hair" by Mary Cassatt

This is a pastel piece from 1901 titled, "Mother combing Sara's hair" by Mary Cassatt. Her work had an emphasis in depicting the intimate lives of women, especially when taking care of their children. She was inspired by the Impressionists which can be shown by her use of brighter colors and experimentation. Her work's models were primarily her friends and relatives.

Here we have an oil painting by no other than Pablo Picasso titled, "The Old Guitarist" which he created in late 1903 and early 1904

Here we have an oil painting by no other than Pablo Picasso titled, "The Old Guitarist" which he created in late 1903 and early 1904. Picasso was living in Barcelona at the time and was in his Blue Period, where he limited himself to a monochromatic blue palette, flattened forms, and themes of human suffering and isolation. He was only 22 when he painted this iconic piece.
