I wake up in the morning, tired from all the action yesterday. I walk downstairs, fatigued the whole time. Once I get to the kitchen, I sit down at the table and greet my mom.
"Hey, how are you doing, sweetie?" My mom asks
"I'm okay, kinda tired though." I pause. "Can I have eggs and bacon for breakfast?"
"Sure, but only because both of us have the day off." Before she can continue, the doorbell rings. "Oh! That should be Julie; why don't you go let her in?
"Alright." I get up and walk over to the door. "Hey Julie."
"Hey!" She jumps in and hugs me. "Do you wanna go swimming today?
"Sure, let me just wake up, eat, and get in my swimsuit." I pause for a second. "Hold up, aren't you supposed to be in school today?"
"No, the headmaster is letting me hang with you to try to get you better by tomorrow." She steps inside and closes the door, afterword dropping the bag with the swimsuit and towel in it.
"Oh, okay. Come on over and eat."
We go to the kitchen and eat our food. After, Julie goes into my bathroom to change into her swimsuit while I change into mine in my room. Once we change, we bike over to the water tower.
"I can't climb up the ladder..." I pause "My chest still hurts a bit from the crash."
"Okay, let's just swim across the lake and work on the house some more."
We swim across the lake to the restored cabin, we climb up onto the balcony, soaking wet. We go in the house to find that it has been fully furnished and that a path has been cleared to get here, big enough for a truck.
"Julie! The cabin has been furnished and a path has been cleared so we can bike here!"
"Really? COOL!" I hear her answer.
I go into the bedroom, where I see Tom hanging up clothes in the closet.
"Tom?" I whisper.
He turns around in a flash, spotting me immediately.
"I'm gonna bring our bikes down the path to the new bike rack out front." I hear July call.
"OKAY!" I turn back to Tom. "Please don't run this time, I know that was you in the hospital and I really need to talk to you."
"Marie..." He pauses. "You know I love you, but I don't know if I can forgive you for what you did at school."
"Tom, Julie forced me to do that. I wanted to go to the office with you. The car accident just reinforced that for me."
"Really?" He looks at me, hopeful. "How can you prove it to me?"
"Like this." I walk up to him and hug him before looking into his eyes and kissing him.
After a minute, we sit on the bed next to each other hand in hand, talking with one another about all that had happened since I went into the coma.
"So, you were in a coma, and I was the person that was with you throughout everything?" Tom asks.
I blush. "Yeah, that's how I realized I loved you and not Julie." I pause "Though when you came into the hospital, I was confused. I thought you loved me." I stop, on the verge of tears.
"Marie..." He trails off.
I let go of his hand and stand up. "Thanks. That's all I needed to know. I was going to break up with Julie anyway, so I guess I'm single again."
"Wait! Marie! That's not what I meant!" He calls after me.
I whirl around to find him standing right in front of me. "Then what did you mean?!" I yell at him as I push him away.
He stops me and pulls me into a hug. "I meant that I love you." He pulls my tear-stained face up to look at him, before kissing me softly on the lips.
Suddenly, I hear a scream. I break away to see Julie standing there, jaw on the floor. "Marie, how could you do this to me!?" She screams before collapsing on the floor, crying.
I walk over to her and give her a hug. "Julie, I will always be your friend, but while I was in the coma, I had a big life reflection and realized I loved Tom. I'm sorry."
She stops crying and looks up at me. "I understand." She says before getting up and walking out of the cabin, like being my significant other was a competition and she lost.
I text my mom that I will be staying at the cabin that night, before I go to the bedroom where Tom is lying in the bed. I climb in next to him before shutting my eyes to go to sleep. As I drift off, I feel Tom pull my body close to his and tuck his arms underneath my chest. Then, I drift into sleep.
