WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT _______________________________________________________________________ All too soon we were hoarded into one of the glass pods of the London Eye along with an assorted band of tourists. There were some old American couples, young families and foreign students, all equipped with raincoats. Get me out off here. Now, I thought. I planned and escape route mentally, if I just stayed at the back and jumped off before the doors closed maybe I could make it out- Whoosh. Too late. The doors closed shut around us. There was no going back now. Everyone started crowding their way around the glass walls. I chose to stick to the middle, hoping the motion would feel less there. 'You ever been before?', Brad asked, taking a seat on the shiny bench next to me. I thought of the time my parents brought me as a kid and I just screamed the whole way through. They knew better to leave me on the ground the next time. 'Not in years.' 'Yeah me neither. Its the type of thing you need a reason to visit or you do just so you can tick it off your bucket list' 'So, whats your reason then?' 'You.' I tried to ignore the my suddenly red cheeks and changed the subject. 'So, you've ticked this off.. What else do you have on your bucket list?' 'This is gonna sound so cheesy,' he cringed,' Have a platinum selling album, win a Brit, have an international tour...' He trailed off. You gotta hand it to him. The kid is ambitious. 'hmm visit LA, oh, and go skydiving.' I gagged. 'Oh I'd never do that in a million years! I'm terrified of heights!' I blurted out before I could stop myself. 'Oh well you would've told me that before I brought you on the tallest ferris wheel in Europe!' He laughed as I bit my awkward lip. 'C'mon, It's not that bad. You'll love it, I promise,' he told me, pulling me up by the hand. I reluctantly got up and was huddled over to the window. I was immediately overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of it, it was a lot bigger than I remembered. It was boundless. Infinite. There were twinkling lights as far as the eye could see. The clouds matched the colour of the late city. Random buildings sprouted up amongst smaller lanes, illuminated in a neon glow. It was just so...big. 'Wow,' I sighed. I reached out to press my hand against the cool window. 'Told you you would love it,' he said resting his head on my shoulder. His breath on my neck send an unfamiliar shiver down my body. I continued to watch the busy world go by. I had always loved people watching, but never at this scale. I watched the skyscrapers flash blood orange in the setting sun, and I imagined skinny girls prancing around in skimpy dresses, ready for a night out, business people rushing home to greet the weekend, a girl, finally facing her fear and actually enjoying it. All the people, all over this city, and I got to be here, watching them and imagining them, with Brad next to me. I reminded myself how extremely lucky I was. I wished I could just freeze that exact moment. 'Do you ever feel so .. small?' I sighed. 'All the time', he sighed, and then he chuckled, at his own joke. 'I didn't mean it that way. Besides you're taller than me?' 'Thats not exactly an achievement is it. Everyone is taller than you Hayley,' he patted my head, the way you would pat a dog as he sat at your feet. 'Oh would you just shut up, you poo head.' I hit his chest. 'Did you seriously just call me a poo head?' he looked hurt and stroked his ribcage. 'Sorry... bout the ribs, I mean. You're still a poo head.' I stuck my tongue out. 'Poo head,' he smiled quietly to himself looked out across the damp city. He was silent for a moment, still scoping the glossy city, 'See look, theres our houses! he said, pointing to a barely recogniseable suburb miles away. Everywhere looked the same to me, the houses were all a similar shade of twilight. I let out a small laugh. he was so adorable. It was then that I realised, we had almost gone the whole way around the wheel.. And no vomit. I beamed proudly at Brad. This was his doing. He grinned proudly back, he knew he had achieved something. * The rain was bucketing down after stepping out of the capsule. I might not have gone so far as to say I was sorry to be stepping off the wheel but I was immediately distracted by the shivering cold. I regretted forgetting a coat with a hood. I tried folding my arms over my already damp hair, shuddering with the bitter rain. I looked at Brad. 'What next?', I shouted over the pelting. He stared at his dark Vans and shoved his hands deep in his pockets. 'I didn't think I would make it this far to be honest..' he gave a careful smile. 'I dunno about you but I'm starving!' I got more anxious as the rain grew heavier around us. there was not a canopy in sight. 'Em well theres an Italian place down to the left I think.. Or maybe back there... Or theres loads of take aways down that direction..' He took his time contemplating and weighing up his options. He was nice and toasty in his dry beanie while I however was sloly dying of the freezing cold. 'Maybe I could text Tris he knows his way arou-' that was it. I grabbed his hand and ran in whichever direction I could. The rain pounded in my face, blurring my vision. My booots splashed with every step. He turned suddenly at a corner, dragging me with him. i found myself under a swanky hotel canopy, with a concierge and everything, watching the rain pour down around us. 'What was that for?', he panted, leaning against the wall. I rolled my eyes at him. I allowed him to catch his breath before shouting, ' hey Brad!' I stuck my hand out and flicked the incoming rain at him. right in the face. Yuss. The concierge gave us a discerning look and shoook his top hatted head. Brad shrugged then stood up. Rubbing his eyes and spitting out the dirty water. 'I actually know where we are now.. Ready to make a run for it again?' Before I even had time to reply, he grabbed me by the hand. We crossed the road, dodging the inbound traffic and turned right down a side street. 'You're sure you know where youre going yeah?' I yelled, still being drowned out by the bucketing. He looked back at me, without stopping and raised his eyebrows. Sure enough, we turned a corner and there it was. 'Of course you know where all the Nando's in London are', I teased him. 'Its not the most romantic place ever but its warm and dry and got nice chicken', he smiled holding the door open for me. 'Theres only one problem', I said,' I'm a vegetarian.' The look on his face was priceless. His smile dropped and he gulped. The colour rushed from his face. 'Oh eh well I guess we could eh try somewhere else?', he stuttered. 'Eh Brad...it was a joke. I love chicken.' He turned around to face me and his face lit up. 'Chicken it is. Waheyy!'
