The place was booming up celebration as we got to the Chief's palace. Men and women sweating from extreme euphoria. There were
Sounds of a chant, I figured to be "Yoo yoo yoo yaa yo", could be heard all over the atmosphere.
The moon was full and stood brightely up in the sky. The night had chilley winds blowing. It was a nice sight to behold.
Throughout the walk there, I could feel butterflies churning up in my tummy.
"Well it's now or never."
I grabbed Teeya by the hand, not wanting to let go. I could feel deadly eyes on me, eyes that were sickening, eyes of prey enough to cripple but I still forged on.
Soon we are at the epicenter of it all. Teeya was so caught up in the singing, I was by far the only one not singing along. How'd I? It was in Dagbani, I can't speak it not to talk of even singing it.
The drumming and singing was louder than I'd ever expected. Well just enjoy it while it lasts huh?
Soon a clearing was made in the centre, apparently the Chief and Tee were to make their appearance. .... I couldn't see clearly, but the little I saw, I realized they came riding on two gigantic horses both bearing the Royal emblem.
And there he was in my smock material. So this was actually true? He looked handsome, infact beautiful. The patterns of the smock brought out his northern masculinity. And oh! The hat he wore, which was equally made out of the smock material made him stand out.
He looked like a Dagomba god.
There were screams of appellations and drumming as they were ushered in. The Chief was made to sit on his royal throne which was made of delicate animal skin and other expensive accessories.
I could tell he was tensed up, I so knew even though he was all smiley and stuff. The Chief himself wasn't bad in appearance. His smock felt extra heavy, and his smock patterns bold and outspoken. His cap too was in sync. He had a powerful. Horsefly swat in his hands, which he swayyed up and down, left ,right center in tune with the beat.
The celebrations commenced with the Chief, that's Tee's dad pouring libations and making incantations. Figured it was more of a prayer thingy.
Slowly, it progressed vigrous dancing from Kumbungu men. They were so rowdy, all dressed in beautiful smocks with accompanying hats. They each held guns, which freaked me out at first, while dancing.
Teeya says it's a dance called "Bamaaya".
Believe me when I say, I genuinely enjoyed the dance. I was yearning for more already. I never knew culture could be this vivid and interesting
Teeya was summoned and I stood lonely waiting for her to get back. But no, it was time for the Kumbungu maidens to give their dance.
I squealed in excitement.
"Guess it's time to behold Sumaya's masterpiece"
The girls trooped in energetically with the rhythm of the beats. It was a kaleidoscope of smock colours, patterns and designs. Showed the creativity, and fashion touch of each damsel.
Kaish, come and see moves. The dance is called Simpa and it was done by vigrous shaking of the waist and buttocks in sync with the tunes. The preying eyes of the men on the females couldn't go unnoticed and they smiled in extreme delight. Sumaya was by far the most vibrant has her twists and turns were unique.
I spotted Teeya. Equally shaking what her mama gave her.
"Go Teeya," I screamed in pride.
That was my girl doing the most, you know
