The Mockingjay Returns

We look at each other, shock on my face as I see him. I simply smile at him and he smiles in return. I then proceed to walk in my house when I'm halted with a voice "Katniss" he says a little too uncomfortably,I turn round to find him smiling at me. "oh hey Peeta" I say as I fumble for the doorknob he goes on "They let me home last week but told me you were in District 13" he tries to make conversation I open my door and I'm about to step in when he says "I hope to see you around then" I turn to face him and remember the times on the train and how we helped each other through nightmares. I simply reply with "ok" and shut the door. I look out the window as Peeta walks to his house knowing that he will never truly be the same.

As I look around my home which has been untouched since the day I visited all those months ago. I see the cobwebs beginning to gather but I see everything neatly placed in its position. I see the kitchen that my mother and prim used to cook in and then I spot it, the picture of me and Prim. I must only be 12 in the picture but a rush of memories flood back of us together in the summer months playing with what little we had. I move on quickly before I break down and head up the stairs to my room, as I am walking I by pass Prim's room but I'm to afraid to go in so that room remains off limits. I open my room door and find the bed and I go to sleep after a long journey. I wake up several hours later with banging on my door. I slowly look at my clock, it says it's 6pm. The banging continues as I make my way down the stairs and I see Sae at my door with Haymitch. "Hello" I say. Haymitch crashes through the door "Hello to you too sweetheart." He says "Katniss I brought some dinner, I hope you don't mind." Sae asks "No of course not Sae, come in." I say ,Sae goes to the kitchen to sort out dinner while me and Haymitch take our places as the table.

Sae comes back with food and we sit down and eat. Sae and Haymitch try to make conversation but I have nothing to say, they try ask me about my journey from District 13 but I don't say anything. Haymitch tries to make some lame jokes about how we are all doomed but I've had enough, I want them to leave. They sense me not enjoying the pleasure of their company so Sae picks up the plates and heads to the kitchen to clean them leaving me and Haymitch alone. "So you heard about the boy?" Haymitch quizzes "Yes" now can you please leave "Look sweetheart..." he goes on but I cut him off before he can say anything "Haymitch I'm really not in the mood.""c'mon Haymitch" Sae says "we better go. Well Katniss I will see you tomorrow" she says to which I nod. They both go home leaving me in this empty home myself, I head up the stairs to my room and bury my head under the covers to a night which will surely be filled with nightmares.

 I am in the games when I see monkeys heading towards us, I look around and spot Peeta and Finnick getting eaten alive. "Peeta. Finnick" I scream as I run towards them to spot them both dead, that's when I wake up to find daylight. Another night I have made it through but it is not getting any easier.

I decided today I am not going to do anything. I realise that Sae will be here any second with breakfast that she had promised me, that's when the doorbell goes. I make my way downstairs and open the door to find Peeta. He is wearing shorts and a white top which looks to be covered in dirt, his face is covered in dirt and his hair is very scruffy. "Peeta, are you ok?" I ask "Yeah I just decided to plant some Primrose bushes in your garden as a reminder of her." He says "Thank you" I say as a whisper when I am about to shut the door he stops it with his foot "Katniss you know I'm here for you, I mean I've lost my brothers so I understand." He explains. That sounds like the caring Peeta I used to know "yeah okay" It's all I can say as I just keep thinking about Prim.

I shut the door and smile as I am one step closer to the boy who threw the bread to me all those years ago.
