Shawn
Hearing Abbigail say it out loud that she wanted to adopt these babies put a smile on my face. I had to leave the room so I could cry and not wake those precious little girls. I slid down the wall as the man and woman came out to see what was going on. They sat on either side of me as I cried out in mixed emotions. I was torn between the loss of my own twins only to be blessed with a stranger's twins.
Minutes later, as I was calming down, Melanie came out and let me know she got Abbigail calmed down and asleep. I thank her, the couple and go back in the room. The twins were still asleep and Abbigail looked peaceful. I climb in with Abbigail and she lets out a content sigh. I kiss her forehead and tuck hair away from her sleeping face.
I woke to a baby crying and to my surprise, Abbigail was sitting in a chair in the room already nursing with a baby. I notice that there's a bottle on the table next to her and pick up the remaining baby. I take the chair next to Abbigail and begin feeding the second baby. "Have you been up long," I ask in a quiet yawn.
"No, just a couple minutes. I was able to find her myself and maternal instincts took over," she chokes quietly.
"I'm proud of you," I say softly and she gives a light smile. "You're going to prove everyone wrong and show them that a mother's love doesn't need sight."
"We're going to need baby furniture and car seats..."
"Babe," I say softly with a smile as she starts talking a mile a minute and she takes a deep breath. "Its already taken care of. I promise. My car is here, car seats already installed. Our family is setting up a nursery before you're discharged from the hospital. I was up a couple of hours ago and my mother and I fed them. I gave her my card and asked her to get everything we would need for these babies."
"I love you," she chokes with a smile.
"I love you too, Abbigail. I want you to let me worry about these things for now and just focus on getting better and bonding with these beautiful little girls," I say softly.
"I don't know what I'd do without you," she chokes quietly and begins burping the baby she was nursing.
"I hope you never have to find out," I say quietly as Melanie quietly enters the room. "How's the nursery coming?"
"I don't know, I'm here with Beth. She wanted to check on the baby after what happened with the twins yesterday," she chokes quietly. "These babies are a blessing and I'm happy to see that Abbigail has taken a bond to them."
"These babies have already grown on me and I'm honored to be their mother," she chokes with a hint of sadness in her voice. "How's Beth?"
"Your mothers are with her checking out the baby. They all sent me to check up on you guys," she says quietly, wiping her eyes. "Would it be okay if I held her Abbigail?"
I watch as Abbigail's arms hold the baby in her arms, protectively against her chest, not wanting to give her up. I offer Melanie to finish feeding the baby I was feeding and comfort Abbigail as tears rolled down her cheeks. Our mothers and Beth walk in, I lift her from the chair and take her out of the room as my mother took the baby from Abbigail.
I carry her passed our fathers and sisters as they call out to us and took her to the cafeteria. I sat with her in my lap in a quiet corner and held her as she cried. She held onto me like her life depended on it and I let silent tears roll down my cheeks. "I'm sorry," I choke quietly.
She lifts her head from my chest, a confused look on her face and feels my facial expression. She lays her head back down on my chest without a word and traces her finger over the scar on my shoulder. "I still have you," she chokes in a whisper.
