Chapter 3: Lucky 3
Elizabeth Barrett Browning once said “ the luck of the third adventure ”. There was also the famous quote of “third's time the charm ”.
Thirds time the Charm– it meant that if you aren't lucky on your previous two attempts, in the third, you would be victorious. Some people in the world believe in those famous quotes.
He was one of those people. But he realize that it was a bunch of hogwash wisdom full of deceitful white lies.
There was nothing fortunate or promising within the 3rd time.
It was all a made-up lie. Luck doesn't exist for him.
There was only one thing that exist for him...
Misfortune and a curse.
As someone who used to live in a scientific derived and materialistic world, he shouldn't believe in those things.
Being unlucky and cursed was just a bunch of superstitious things. He should believe in Science with a logical and rational perspective.
But then, a miracle happened to him.
He who should have died has been given a 2nd chance. Since then, he started to be more open-minded since things that should have happened in fictional works have happened to him.
It was a miraculous mysterious phenomenon. He was given a second chance to live. He was reincarnated with his memories intact and a new chance to live in a new world.
But then, his second life was unpleasant but bearable. Unpleasant because he was granted an abnormal trait that was viewed by most of the people of that world with prejudice and disdain. Bearable because there was someone who was there for him and genuinely takes care of him.
He used to the thought that he could be strong and can keep going forward as long as those people he care about loves him.
In the end, he was pushed down into the abyss.
The life of Reinhardt Baskerville— The foolish and ignorant magician ended after he was cast off in the abyss by his cousin Levi Baskerville under the supervision of their Lord/Madam Glen Baskerville.
He thought that he would end up in the afterlife filled with sadness and anger toward those people who betrayed him.
Yet, he was given another chance again.
People have said that time is the charm.
But the moment that his mother and the midwife have seen him, he couldn't see anything 'lucky' with his situation.
This life so far was filled with misfortune.
The chances that were given to him aren't a blessing but a curse.
From the moment that he was abandoned by his mother in this life and given to the orphanage by the midwife, his situation didn't get any better.
He could see why his mother and the midwife are scared of him. It was because he was born with that accursed pair of odd eyes that he have in his second life.
He thought that it would be gone in this life since it was a rule that belongs to the previous world. But this none likable pair of emerald and crimson eyes stayed with him.
His mother and the midwife have mistaken him for a vampire because of his left crimson eyes. At first, the caretakers of the orphanage also thought the same as those people.
But then, when one of the people from the Church visited because of their request to eradicate the 'dhampir' child, it was confirmed by that official that he wasn't a vampire.
He also thought since he was born of this world that he was a dhampir like what all of the people around him thought until that official from the church dismissed their claims.
" Interesting... A single crimson eye? He wasn't a vampire. I couldn't see anything special about him other than his single crimson eye. But.. Could he see the world formula? "
Even he was grateful for that official to dismiss their claims, that member of the Church was a very strange one. After the request for consultation and the confirmation that he wasn't a dhampir, the treatment of the caretakers of the orphanage changed.
Not in a good way...
Before, they always fear him because they thought that he was a half-vampire, a dhampir. They were always cautious and afraid of handling him.
But when the truth came out, that he was just a normal child with a strange single crimson eye, he was treated miserably.
They don't even bother to correct the assumptions of the other children that he was a 'dhampir', a 'nomination, and a 'monster'. They have stood there on the sidelines enabling the children to make assumptions about him.
Since he wasn't a dhampir, those caretakers reasoned for his strange colored single eye. They treated him harshly because of it and called him an 'ill omen'.
When he first heard it from those caretakers, he wanted to laugh at the irony. In his second life, he was called a child of the ill omen. It seems that the cycle would continue here in this world.
It's been years since he was born on this world. This third life and another chance that was given to him...
A lot of things have happened in the orphanage. The cold eyes that were given to him by the caretakers, the isolation and name-calling from the children, and the lesser food that was given to him.
He was already 5 years old.
Until now, he was still nameless.
5 years. He can't let things continue like this.
The current year is 1865 of the 19th century. The city that he lived in is called Felpersham and was also known as a Cathedral City.
He doesn't believe in the so-called luck and third's time the charm anymore. But he would pave a way for his path and he can't just let those people around him look at him with prejudice just because of his single crimson eye.
He also wanted to leave that horrible orphanage. But none of the people who were looking for a child were willing to adopt him.
That's fine for him. He doesn't need the help of those adults. He would leave the orphanage with his own hands and effort.
Standing at the main door of the Cathedral of Felpersham, his first step towards leaving that orphanage starts here.
