She slowly rubbed away the sleep from her eyes, waking up to someone else's groan. Sitting up on her bed Rose tried to find the source of the noise, the one that had woken her up from her peaceful slumber. It was a second year boy with curly blonde hair, howling as Madam Pomfrey tended to the Mandrake bite on his finger.
"Now Mr. Diggory, it isn't all that bad. Just sit tight and I'll be done before you know it." You didn't need a Sherlock to figure out that the nurse was beyond annoyed with him. Unfortunately for everyone else in the Hospital Wing, her words failed to soothe the boy. As more and more patients began to stir, the nurse took matters into her own hands.
"Mr Diggory" she said sternly, "You've been bitten by a Mandrake not a basilisk. You are waking everyone with your incessant whining."
Luckily that was enough to shut him up. It now dawned on the nurse that her young patient was awake. She turned around to see Rose sitting up. She rushed forward to push the girl back down on the bed.
" Lie down dear." She said gently "You took a bludger to the head, both you and Ms Patel here." On the bed beside her own, was the other Ravenclaw blissfully asleep.
"How long has it been?" Rose questioned. "How many hours was I out?"
Pomfrey glanced at her with pity. "You've been here for a week Ms. Malfoy." Rose immediately shot up but her efforts were in vain as she was pushed down again. "You need to rest dear. Even Quidditch matches don't result with head injuries often, you are lucky to be awake after a week."
"Have I been sleeping for a week?" She asked horrified.
"You have been in and out of consciousness." Pointing to Patel and Rose, she continued, "Compared to the two of you, Peter was lucky enough to only have injured his leg. He will be leaving soon but I'm afraid the two of you will have to stay here for two more weeks."
Rose opened her mouth to protest but again, her efforts were futile as Madam Pomfrey knew what she was going to say, having dealt with children for many, many years.
"Yes child, you will have to take remedial classes. The professors have already agreed to it, as has your mother. She came here when you were first brought in and hand delivered this letter." She quickly rummaged through Rose's bed side table and brought out a letter. "Your friends have also been asking to see you. Really, it's impossible to shoo them away three times a day." She complained.
Warmth spread across her body and those very words were music to her ears. Her body visibly relaxed as she sunk into the comfortable pillows. She was very grateful to have friends like them, she thought smiling slightly. Madam Pomfrey was smiling as well, glad that Rose had finally stopped worrying.
"Ms Longbottom has been quite persistent that she must visit you." The nurse said. "Now that you are awake, I'll let her in today evening. I'll inform her before hand dear." She finished gently patting Rose's head. It was very hard not to like Rose, the girl was bubbly and full of life. Pomfrey also knew Lucille from her days at the school and she couldn't believe how different her daughter acted from the former snobby, pureblood supremacist. Of course, she had crossed paths with Lucille after her days in Hogwarts and she was very glad to see the beautiful blonde had finally opened her eyes. Lucille was almost unrecognisable, with the depth of her maturity and righteousness. Although Rose barely physically resembled her mother, she surely reflected her radical personality.
As she turned to walk away, Rose called out.
"Madam Pomfrey?"
"Yes dear?" She asked, her eyebrows slightly raised in question.
"I go by Rose. Ms Malfoy is my mother ma'am." Rose replied with a cheeky smile.
Chuckling, Madam Pomfrey shook her her head walking away.
