There was a stranger standing next to Kenma on the train that day.
The blonde struggled to keep his eyes off him, so much that he wasn't even playing games on his phone like he normally would.
The stranger was indeed beautiful. He stood against the golden afternoon sunbeams filtrating through the wide windows, his skin glowing like honey with the warm light. It was evident that he didn't really take care of himself much: his hair was messy, the white shirt framing his torso still outlined with unironed creases, and a red tie hanging loosely around his neck.
But still, he was beautiful. It was something in his features, maybe, even though they were altered by weariness. Kenma did see the deep eye bags under his sombre eyes; he did see the pale, hollow skin indented between his bones. Yet he couldn't help but think of how pretty that stranger was.
Nobody else seemed to think that, though. The other people in that carriage studied the sickly boy with repulsed curiosity, never once the concept of beauty peering into their minds.
Still, that boy distracted Kenma even from playing games on his phone. It had been probably weeks from the last time the blonde had touched his video games.
And how could he?
How could he think of games when he was becoming a stranger to the person he loved? He was desperately holding on to that relationship, trying to collect the shards of the broken memories to remind Kuroo of all the things they'd been through together.
He had to remind Kuroo even to take care of himself at times.
Kenma had been running after him for weeks, trying to get him to accomplish the basic routinely actions. Kuroo's grades had been going down steeply, yet he couldn't seem to care less. He started skipping meals, forgetting to shower, going full days with his gaze lost in an indefinite point. He didn't even bother talking to Kenma at that point.
And Kenma was just miserable. He too couldn't get himself to focus on anything else anymore - not his schoolwork, not volleyball, not even his videogames. His eyes would always fall on his phone in search of any notification from Kuroo. His fingers would run through the old conversations, his lips quivering as he thought of the good old times.
He was being abandoned, he knew it. What a mistake to think anything would ever last forever. Everything is subject to change - it's just the way things work. No man ever steps in the same river twice. So how could he ever think that what he had with Kuroo was going to be any different?
Was it maybe something wrong with Kenma? The boy couldn't help but wonder if he'd done something wrong to cause that sudden and irreparable veer in their relationship. Maybe it was something he'd said, something he'd done. Maybe he had taken everything for granted.
He didn't know. He didn't even want to think about it, but his mind just naturally dwelled in the past, looking for any sign of change, that turning point where the unexpected switch came.
And it was clear that things could never go back to how they were. It just wasn't possible at that point. But Kenma couldn't think of saying goodbye. He didn't want to let everything go down the drain.
But again, why was Kuroo slipping from his grip like that? And why so unexpectedly?
Kozume didn't know, nor did he want an answer. He wasn't ready to let go yet, plus he wouldn't allow Kuroo to destroy himself so recklessly. And even if Tetsurou didn't love him like that, Kenma was still going to stick with him. At least to help him take his life back in hand.
These untold feelings screamed in the quiet of the seeping evening, the bright horizon out of the windows gradually bathed in the dark of the night.
A voiceless 'I love you' hovered over the two strangers' heads. But one was too scared to say it, and the other too indifferent to hear it.
And so, it remained untold.
