You sat quietly in the attic, where feeble sunrays struggled to breach the heavy cloud of darkness that enveloped you. Your body still ached from what you'd undergone downstairs, moments before all hell broke loose - and it was with a vicious expression that Kuroo had then decided to throw you and Iwaizumi up in the suffocating room like discarded trash, slamming the door shut with a finality that echoed in the empty space.
The silence that followed was deafening, pressing down on your chest like a physical weight.

Your heart pounded in your ears, the loud thumps making it hard for you to detect how far Kuroo's steps were. However, as soon as everything quieted down, you felt secure enough to crawl over to Iwaizumi, ignoring the jolts of sharp pain all over your body thanks to the adrenaline coursing through your veins.

You reached him, searching his hand with your own trembling one, and you squeezed it tightly; his skin was clammy and cold, the faint pulse beneath it barely there. And it was no surprise, given how many blows to his chest he had taken. It was actually a miracle that he was any pulse at all.

However, it was his face that carried all the physical evidence of what he'd endured - it was swollen, blotted in terrifying hues of deep blues and black. Knowing that you were the cause of his pitiful state, you couldn't control the tears slipping from your eyes, which fell right onto his battered face.

You noticed his eyelids fluttering weakly, and you found yourself holding your breath as you waited for them to finally open.

"(Y/n)," his voice was low and hoarse, a mere whisper of the strength it once held, "You're here."

"Yes, yes, Iwa, I'm here," you choked out, your voice thick with emotion. You squeezed his hand tighter, as if you could anchor him to this world with your touch. Your tears slipped through the creases of his skin, mingling with the blood and sweat that matted his hair.

His breath was shallow, each inhale sounded like a struggle. You could see the pain etched into his features, the way his body trembled with the effort to stay conscious - he forced a smile, a ghost of the grin that used to light up your world. His thumb caressed your cheek, leaving a faint trail of warmth that quickly faded.

"Live," he whispered, his eyes locking onto yours with a desperate intensity, "Live for me."

"You're gonna live too," you whispered back, the lie screeching in the oppressive silence, "You're gonna live. We're gonna be free and happy, together."

Iwaizumi winced from a sharp pain radiating through his chest, but he tried to mask it with another tired smirk. He knew his time with you was coming to an end; but Lord, was he thankful to have been able to spend his last minutes with the woman he loved most. Even if these last minutes felt like an endless torture - with his broken bones, your desperate pleas molten in subtle whimpers that ripped his heart apart, - he felt defeatedly at peace in your arms.
He could sense himself slowly slipping away, drifting far away from reality. Still, as his eyes met yours, a terrifying sense of guilt gnawed at him: death forced the prospect of lonely terrors for you. Iwa couldn't be there to hold you through it all - and that killed him.

His voice a fargile thread, "I love you," he breathed.

Your heart ached with the weight of his words, knowing they might be the last you ever heard from him, but in a delicate whisper, you replied "I love you too, Hajime. More than anything."
His beautiful eyes took in your features for a long, silent moment, as if trying to memorize every detail. You knew, deep down, that this would be the last time he would be looking at you.
You could feel a hole burning in your chest, crumpling your heart into ashes to the sight of his fleeting conscience.

"I love you, (Y/n)," he murmured, his voice growing weaker. Your heart skipped a beat, - despite the tragic circumstances, warmth still spread through your chest every time he uttered those words - but no matter how beautiful that phrase sounded in his voice, you sensed the inevitable ending that lingered in the air.
He searched for your gaze, uttering his final words.
"I'll love you forever."
