If Eddard Stark died and his younger brother Benjen Stark became the lord of Winterfell.

In the rage of Robert Baratheon starting a war with the Targaryens on the taking of Lyanna Stark people were done with the mad king. So many members from great houses started a war against the crown. As a result Robert Baratheon was able to kill Prince Rhaegar Targaryen on the trident. But some were not lucky, Lord Eddard Stark was slain on the battle field of the trident leaving his younger brother to take up Winterfell.
Benjen Stark was young when he got the news of his brother's death but his sister Lyanna was alive and was safe in Robert's arms. Soon the two were married and became the new king and queen of the seven kingdoms.
But Benjen Stark needed a wife, and that was seen perfectly to Lord Tywin Lannister to get his only daughter close enough to the crown. So he shipped of his daughter Cersei Lannister to the north were she wed Benjen stark.
