"I don't get why I have to go on this mission!" I complained to my dad."You don't have a choice, Norman." He replied.
"I don't even know what it's about." I countered.
"Here's the file. Take a look."
He handed me a stack of papers. Sighing, I picked up the papers. On the top of the first page was a picture of my victim. The first thing I noticed about the picture was the boy's piercing (green) eyes. I found myself getting lost in them. Somewhere between my dad's rambling, I heard the boy's name.
Ray.
Cute name.
And cute face.
Too bad I have to end him.
...
"He's being transferred to your school. I believe there are some problems involved with his transfer. Your job is to get close to him. Become friends, homies, or whatever you teenagers call it." Dad explained.
"Dad, stop using teenage slang."
"You know what I mean, Norman. Just get him to trust you and then kill him."
"Why do I have to kill him, though. He seems like a decent guy." Pretty cute too, but you don't have to know that.
"He's part of the Red Hearts."
"So? The Red Hearts have a lot of members." I argued.
"He's also their top assassin. If you end him, we take their biggest weapon."
I thought about it for a moment, "Fine."
My dad was obsessed with killing the leader of the Red Hearts. He always said that they had bad blood due to some problems in the past. His obsession began five years ago when my mom passed away. I assumed that her death had something to do with the Red Hearts. However, I wasn't sure why dad was so adamant about getting rid of all the members first.
Ray Hearts: 17
Parents: Leslie (last name unknown) (deceased) Isabella (last name unknown) (deceased)
Siblings: None
School: N/A
Both his parents are dead? Huh, what would I do if my dad were dead? I don't think I would have anyone that cared about me. But why are his parents' last names unknown? And his school? This guy seems to have a lot of secrets. It won't be easy to figure them out.
I heard a soft knock on my door, "Come in!"
"I brought your dinner, Master Norman." Our family maid, Diana, announced.
"You don't have to call me that, Miss Diana. But thank you for the food." I smiled.
"That's your title, Master Norman." She insisted.
"Yea, but my name is Norman."
"How are you feeling about your mission?" She asked, changing the subject.
"Jeez, does the whole world know?"
"Your dad's just excited. It's your first mission!"
"Yea, well, I'm fine." Was I fine? Killing someone my age wasn't a goal in my life. I'm not even sure if he did anything wrong. But dad's already so proud of me.
"That's good. Your mother would be very proud of you." She concluded before leaving.
Would she be proud? Or would she be disappointed? Her own son was assigned to kill someone.
...
"I'll see you in a few months, Norman." My dad said, hugging me at the school gates. Clover Academy was a boarding school. The place was owned by my family, but it didn't give me any free perks. Education was the only free thing. I was still forced to stay in a dorm. But, come to think of it, staying in a dorm would increase my chances of finding Ray.
"Bye, dad. Please don't call or text me."
"Shut up, Norman." I laughed as he got back into his car.
My cousin, Riley, greeted me when I entered the building.
"Hey, Norman!"
"Hi, Riles. How are you doing?"
Riley or Riles owned the academy. Here's the weird part: He's 22 and in college still. His dad had this awful mid-life crisis and decided that being a husband and father was too much for him. He decided to pursue his dumbass dreams of being a YouTube vlogger. He has two subscribers. One of which is his mother, a lady with dementia in a nursing home. He literally made her a YouTube account just to make her subscribe.
"I'm great! What about you?"
"Eh, could be better."
"Do you wanna talk about it?" Riley asked, worry covering his face.
"Maybe later? I'm so exhausted right now."
"Ok! Your dorm number is 612. You can get your keys from the office. Your roommate isn't here yet, but I'll let you know when he arrives."
I left my cousin and turned the corner to the office. The lady at the front desk seemed to recognize me because she searched for my name in the system and handed me my keys. I thanked her and left to find my dorm.
As soon as I entered my dorm, I jumped on one of the beds and lay there. I was so tired, which was normal for me. My dad claimed I slept 100% of the day. I, however, believe that's false. It's more like 98%. But can you blame me?! Staying awake for even ten minutes is so tiring. Especially if 9/10 of those minutes is listening to people's bullshit.
I heard my phone ringing and groaned as I patted my pockets to find it.
"Hello?" I spoke.
"Did Ray arrive yet?" My dad's voice asked.
"Not yet, dad. It hasn't even been twenty minutes. What's your problem?"
"I just wanted to know if he's there!"
"Yea, well, this is my mission. Not yours."
"Yes, yes. I know. I won't bother you for now. Goodbye, son."
"Bye." I sighed as the call ended. "For now," I whispered to myself.
"Norman!" I heard as the door slammed open. My breath hitched as I forced myself not to scream.
"Seriously, Riles! You scared the living shit out of me!" I yelled, catching my breath.
"Sorry, Norman!" Riley apologized, "I just wanted to introduce you to your roommate."
That caught my attention as I jumped off the bed. Standing behind Riley was a black-haired boy with piercing green eyes.
"This is Ray. He's new here. You're in the same grade, so getting along won't be a problem. Ray, this is Norman. He can be an idiot sometimes, but I swear he's an angel." With a smile, Riley turned around and left.
He was my roommate!
My mission will be so much easier.
"Um, hey?" Ray said.
His voice was soft.
I liked it.
Hold on. What? I'm supposed to kill him, not like him.
