"In my defense, I told you I hate dogs."

SEPTEMBER 28th
GOTHAM CITY, NEW YORK
CRIME ALLEY
SASHA ROCQUE'S APARTMENT
6 a.m.

SASHA ROCQUE WAS SUSPICIOUS.

As she made her sandwich for lunch she watched as her mother hummed lightly as she packed up her bag for work. Something was off. Her mother didn't hum, she didn't bounce on the toes of her feet, she didn't look at things with bright sparkling eyes, she smiled sometimes but not as big as she was smiling now. Her mother wasn't a sad or miserable woman but she was never happy. Never. God would come back to life before her mother would be happy.

"Is...is something happening today?" Sasha couldn't help but ask.

Gloria turned to her, showing off rows of pearly white teeth. "What are you talking about?"

"It's just..you're happy," Sasha said slowly. "Too happy. Mom, you're smiling."

Gloria touched her mouth, "Oh, yeah. I am." she smiled again this time brighter than the last. "Today is just a good day. My prayers have finally been answered."

Sasha eyed her, "Is something going on?"

From the kitchen table her grandmother, Maria Gomez, said in Spanish, "The son of a bitch is closer to returning."

Sasha's eyebrows raised in surprise. That was the first time her grandmother had acknowledged her in days outside of making demands for Sasha to do things for her. Her grandmother didn't like Sasha but it was fine because the feeling was mutual. Maria Gomez was a short elder Dominican woman, with tanned skin that was darker than Gloria's but much lighter than Sasha's, graying brown hair, and light brown eyes that only were useful when behind reading glasses.

"Mama!" Gloria complained loudly. "Don't talk about him like that. He's a good man."

"He's a criminal," Maria spat once again in Spanish. "And you've shown that I've raised a fool if you allow him back in this house. No good scum."

"You don't even have valid reasons for hating him," Gloria protested. "You only hate him because-"

"What is she talking about?" Sasha questioned cutting her off.

"Oh, Sasha, it's your father," Gloria said excitedly. "You haven't checked the calendar?"

Her mom kept a single calendar solely to track down the days until her father's release date. It was kept on the fridge door but Sasha never checked it.

"Um...no," Sasha rubbed the back of her neck. "Should I?"

"His date is coming up," Gloria beamed. "He should be coming home before you leave for school. Isn't that great?"
