Amelia didn't know how to use a map quite as well as she thought, and they ended up going in circles more often than going straight. After an hour of aimless wandering, they changed their course and started towards a train station in the heart of the city.
"I've always wanted to go to Union Station. They recently renovated it and now it looks beautiful. Now granted, the train station is not in Union Station, it's actually outside it. Union Station is a bunch of restaurants and an aquarium."
"Is there anywhere I can buy clothes? I've been walking around in this outfit for ages," Kyreen said. Caroline had to agree with her. None of them had taken a shower since they were ambushed by the elves, and they had started feeling the effects of it.
"And take a shower?" Caroline added.
Amelia shrugged. "I don't know where you could take a shower, but there's a couple of clothing stores nearby.
Kyreen was bursting for joy now. "But," Amelia started, "You have to carry it all."
"We'll just buy one of those carts I see people using," Kyreen stated.
"I don't think that's how it works," Amelia tried, but Kyreen had skipped off ahead of them.
They had spent the better half of the day now at Target—Kyreen's new favorite place, buying suitable human clothes for everyone, including Ameillia. Kyreen tried taking Amelia's sword and sheath, stating it was too medieval, but Amelia wouldn't part with it.
"They were my dad's," Amelia said.
"At least let me put them in the cart, you'll have easy access to it if that's what you're worried about."
Amelia shook her head.
"Hey, what's that design on your sheath?" Caroline said, noticing the shovel etching again.
"It's kinda a tribute to my dad. He loved playing cards with me. His nickname for me used to be Ace, so when I took it, I etched a spade on there, so I could be reminded of him wherever I went." A tear escaped, and slid down Amelia's cheek. Kyreen gave the sheath back and hugged the girl.
"I'm sorry, from now on I won't mention it," Kyreen said. A small smile crept onto her face, "Hey, do you know what else these carts are good for?" Soon, Amelia was loaded into the cart on top of the clothes and the trio raced around the store shouting with laughter until one of the people working stopped them. They paid for the clothes and met up with Eve. Then all went outside where the boys were waiting for them.
After their late excursion, the group walked until they spotted the glowing lights of the ferris wheel near Union Station at about six. It quickly became a race to the Wheel which left Kyreen far behind, pushing the cart.
They stopped at a high fence that created a barrier between them and Union Station. Lights were still on, and people were walking about inside. Amelia led them around to a gate and they walked in, awed at all the interesting shops and bubbling fountains. In a large pond, fire spouted from the water, and children ran everywhere holding sticks of wispy sweet treats.
"We can spend about an hour here, but I think we get on a late train to the airport and stay in one of their hotels. I don't know about you, but I kind of want to sleep in a bed tonight," Amelia told them, but the group had already sped away towards a nearby restaurant that wafted the delicious smell of American cuisine.
The feast began as they ordered giant milkshakes and burgers. "I always wondered why humans ate meat. Now I know. These burgers are the best thing to grace this planet," Christian said through a mouthful of stacked hamburgers.
"Best place ever!" Thor said.
Caroline laughed at her brother's enthusiasm. They went around the table sharing jokes and listening to Amelia's bizarre human stories. She described elaborate movie plots about a group of superheroes slaying aliens, and TV show about a witty writer who solved murder mysteries with the police. Caroline and Thor watched their friend's jaws drop as Amelia described the art of filmmaking. Then Christian's face lit up like a lightbulb when Amelia mentioned space.
