Chapter 20

"What?!" Caroline had no words. Ash fell to the floor with a loud thud.

"Ouch!" he yelled. That woke him up. He slowly turned around to see Tam's shocked face. "Oh. I did not see that coming."

Tam tried to take advantage of their shock and lunged at them but they backed away and ran, trying to talk as they went.

"So, that happened," Ash started. Caroline turned towards him to see the shadow arrow that had impaled him had melted into a splotch on his chest. He was slowing down.

Caroline turned into a storage closet and brought Ash with her. "What did he shoot you with?"

"Nothing really bad," he tried, but Caroline could see he was getting weaker. A memory clicked in her head.

"That's shadowflux. We need to get you to Elwin, or a shade."

"Yeah, but we can fix me later. We need to run now," Ash pushed the door open and lead Caroline toward a random hallway, hoping that this one held their friends, but Caroline pulled him back.

"But Tam is back there," Caroline said.

"We can take him." Caroline hardly believed that. They retraced their steps to their hallway. Tam was nowhere to be found.

Ash went to each of the other interrogation rooms, rescuing each of their friends starting with Thor. Melody and Thalia were not in any of the interrogation rooms. By the end, Ash was struggling to walk.

 "They should be here," Ash said. "Wolf was."

Caroline nodded. "Something is definitely up." Soon they had a full group waiting outside the interrogation rooms.

"Wasn't this too easy?" Eve repeated Caroline's thought.

Caroline shook her head in confusion. What in the world were they going to do? They couldn't go back, the MRD was bound to be waiting for them.

Suddenly Ash perked up. "Do you smell that?" Caroline could smell it too, smoking fabric. They slowly turned around to see Melody, Tam, and Thalia.

Ash beat her to the first punch. He hit Tam square in the face. Immediately, he struggled back and collapsed. Before Tam could pounce, Kyreen hit him, sending him flying.

Caroline decided to send a plume of fire at Thalia. The girl put up an icy shield, making the fire flare out like wings. Then she sent a kick at Melody. Caroline hit her square in the face, making the woman look red. She silently let out a cheer of joy for her accomplishment.

The final part of their plan was about to come into place. Well, what was left of their plan? They just had to wait a few more minutes.

The fight was about even, the six of them, with their limited skills, against the three MRD agents with more advanced skills.

Caroline heard footsteps down the hall. She quickly backed out of the fray and turned towards the approaching group. At first, she thought it was a set of MRD soldiers to back up the leaders, but then she realized it was Sophie, Keefe, Fitz, Dex, and Biana. Their backup had arrived. Dex immediately held back and started fiddling with the wires. Caroline assumed he was figuring out how to broadcast the fight since Ash was busy.

The tide slowly turned in their favor and the agents were backed against the wall of the hallway. Sophie took out handcuffs. Tam and Thalia held out their hands to be cuffed. Sweat was now pouring from their faces and they looked defeated.

Sophie had a look of both confusion and sympathy for her old friend that Caroline couldn't share. This man caused so much hurt to everyone.

But Melody still had a snark smirk on her face. She turned towards her companions.
