The black and white police cars zoomed toward her but Caroline was frozen in place. They stopped in front of the shop Caroline and Eve were just at and a guy with a megaphone opened his window.
"We are here for Caroline and Thor Foster, for theft, escape, trespassing, and treason."
Caroline had no words, she didn't think she committed treason, but she had a feeling that the LA Police Department were not the ones that wanted her. She seemed frozen within her own thoughts as the police slowly crept closer.
Eve grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the fray before she was grabbed. People started taking photos of them as they scurried through the streets like frightened mice.
They stopped when they saw the rest of their group, including Amelia's aunt.
"We need to go," Eve said curtly. Amelia's aunt looked behind her at the sirens.
For a second Caroline thought she was going to turn them all in, but the aunt's face just got harder and she replied, "We'll take my car. It's faster."
"Thank you, but don't you need it?" Kyreen said.
"I have the day off," she told them. Caroline could see the policemen getting closer. "Now let's stop talking and get in the car."
She led them over to her large luxury SUV and once everyone was crowded in, slammed on the accelerator and drove through the winding streets in the most obscure pattern.
"We need to shake them before we get to the country," she told them as the group was rocking in their seats from the sharp turns.
They could hear more sirens behind them and Amelia's aunt tried to drive even faster, but the car seemed to be at its max. Their driver muttered a curse and took a turn into an alleyway.
Only one car seemed to follow them down the dark path.
"Are you sure this does't lead to a pile of dumpsters?" Christian asked.
"Trust me," she assured him. "I know this city like the back of my hand. "We'll lose those guys. It's just a matter of time."
Sure enough, when they came out of the alley and took another turn, the sound of the police car behind them faded until they broke out of the packed town and were gliding across a road next to the ocean.
"They'll be back," Caroline whispered.
Soon, the road curved from the ocean, and the landscape became light brown and dotted with windmills.
"Your lands change so quickly," Kyreen noted. They sat in the car for another hour until mountains rose around them.
They swerved through the towering hills for hours until they parted and opened onto the water beyond. Across from the bridge they were on towered another red bridge that felt all too familiar. The van stopped on the peninsula next to a large pier.
"Okay, so I'll stay with you guys tonight, but I'm heading back home in the morning. At which time I'll leave Thor in charge."
They checked into a nearby hotel and didn't bother going anywhere else. Caroline was exhausted from the day and crashed onto the stiff bed. Tomorrow she was going to see her family. Tomorrow she was finally going to be able to get out of this place, and life would possibly get back to normal. All they had to do was take down the current Elvin government, alert the world to their presence, and then have a big slice of mallowmelt. Now that she thought about it, it seemed like a dauntingly impossible task. She let those crazy thoughts spin her to sleep.
