The next morning, I was surprised to see both of them waiting for me. Carin looked like she hadn't slept properly and they're throwing glances at each other.
"Go on, ask him." Keith whispered to his mom. The look of disdain on Carin is very pronounced.
"I told him last night that he can't have a girlfriend until he finished college. He said to ask you when you had your first girlfriend and that should be the time he should be allowed to have a girlfriend as well." Carin explained in a bored tone.
I grinned down at her before turning to Keith.
"You're out of luck, kid. I never had a girlfriend."
Carin's laugh was contagious. The look of horror on Keith's face is comical.
"No... that can't be right. You... you're lying. How can you not have a girlfriend?" Keith stuttered, pointing a finger at me. I only shrugged.
"Listen, kid. I'm from a dysfunctional family. I have always viewed women with suspicions. Your mom's not an exception. I had my own suspicions about her. At the same time, she's the exception. She's the only one I got attracted to. As your father, I don't want you to have a dysfunctional family like mine. So, I asked your mother to marry me."
Keith's eyes got wide. "Wait, you're marrying my mother?" He turned to his mom, then.
"When are you guys going to marry?" He continued, alternating between me and his mom.
"Ask your mom." She's the one who's going to decide the date.
"It's... well... I say yes. But you're supposed to make the arrangements." Carin stuttered. There's something about the way she's looking at me.
"Go up. I have something to talk with your dad."
Keith grunted before running up the apartment.
"How long did it take you to think it over? You look awful." I commented.
She rolled her eyes at me.
"I kept asking myself why you would insist on marriage. I should've just called you to ask. I thought you were just asking as a test. No matter what, it really isn't necessary for us to get married for you to be his father. I thought I should decline, or if you really insist, I should propose executing a prenup agreement to protect you financially."
Her statement is amusing. Who would actually think that it's a test?
"Also... what you said earlier. Is that true or are you just messing with Keith?" She asked hesitantly.
"That was true."
