This is what he's supposed to tell me? I had my mouth open in disbelief. I couldn't recover quickly as he laid out the facts. He's the Sanders that was swept under the rug.
I still have my mouth open as he finished. He looked uncomfortable as he stated everything slowly and methodically. He might have rehearsed it.
I coughed as I closed my mouth.
"Well, that was unexpected. You don't look..."
"Like a Sanders? Yes. To which I'm grateful of."
I frowned at his statement. Well, I can understand his resentment.
"So, why say it now? I really had no clue and I wouldn't have thought of it."
"I know it would be hard to believe. I'm just doing it for the kids." He was silent as he focused on something.
"Okay, maybe for myself, too. I've been hiding this from you for so long. It's starting to feel like a burden." He sighed as he added it.
"Well, I do know that granddad has another son. His lawyer mentioned it to me. You weren't named on the will, but there was a clause stating that if you can be found, you'll receive half of his estate."
The look he gave me after I said that was sharp. I sighed.
"I don't need your money, Sanders." He managed to hold off the harsh tone.
"Technically, it isn't mine. I haven't touched it since he died. I've put it in a trust. Even if you don't want it, why don't I transfer it to Keith's name?"
"Do we have to take a DNA test for it?"
"Yes. The trust would require it to be a legitimate transfer. I could do it with Keith, instead."
He grunted his approval. He's still not one to talk too much. I grinned.
"Well, can I get a hug? Uncle Gabe? Damn, that didn't sound right." I was initially ecstatic about it, but...
We managed an awkward hug before we went out the house to check in with the others. Oliver welcomed me back with a hug.
"What are you to Oliver, then? Uncle-in-law?" I started teasing, and Oliver was cutely confused as he looked over to Gabe. Carin was laughing. Keith managed a grin.
Gabe only rolled his eyes at me.
"Wait, what?" Oliver frowned.
"He's my uncle. What's your birth name?"
"What I'm using right now is my birth name. Your granddad thought my mom would have registered me as Sanders, but he thought wrong."
Oliver's astonishment is a refreshing sight.
"You're a Sanders?" He blurted out.
"Yes." Gabe looked at him straight as he answered.
I waited for them to send Keith to sleep before I talked over the details of the trust.
It's basically the proceeds from the sale of Sanders' Corp. Oliver knew about it.
Carin raised an eyebrow.
"I don't think I should be here."
"You're my wife, why wouldn't you be here?" Gabe replied.
"We're not married yet." Carin responded. She did look uncomfortable. It's the money, I know.
"We will be. Or do I get less appealing with a trust fund?" He teased and Carin hit him on the shoulder.
"I won't have it anyway. She'll directly transfer it to Keith's name. As his parents, we'll manage the earnings until he's old enough. I won't have time for that, so you'll have to do it."
Carin visibly exhaled a huge breath. "This is all happening too fast."
"I know." Gabe agreed. I happily watched them from the side as Oliver enclosed me in his embrace.
Oliver gave me a look and I know what he's thinking. I decided to make a suggestion.
"It's possible to reinvest the earnings and let the trust fund manage it, if you'd rather not do it yourself. You can just withdraw enough money to spend as monthly allowance. You'll have to work out the conditions with the company, though. Trust funds are rather strict with conditions."
"Do I have to learn about trust funds now?" Carin muttered and we all chuckled. Gabe acts like it has nothing to do with him.
The next day, I decided to reintroduce them to Dylan. The adults could easily understand it, but not the kid. And the only kid around is Dylan.
His confused expression as we slowly explained things to him is adorable.
"Wait, he's my uncle?" He pointed at Keith.
"But he's too young!" He exclaimed before we can reply, making us chuckle.
"Oh wait, Gabe's a granddad." I guess the realizations are slow to come. If he's my uncle, he's technically a grand-uncle to my kids.
"I'd rather be called an uncle." He expressed himself.
"I don't want to be called an uncle." Keith followed with a grimace.
"I don't want to call him uncle." Dylan seconded.
Well, we weren't expectingthem to change how they address the other anyway. We only explained therelationship, which the kid hopefully understood.
