It wasn't hard to adjust living together. Gabriel is very accommodating. He's the one adapting to my routine with Keith. Keith easily accommodates him, too. Okay, they are clearly father and son.
As he already mentioned, he's not domesticated. I'm still in charge of the kitchen and most of the chores. Both of them are disciplined enough to help me out when I ask them to.
There's an elephant in the room, but it isn't big enough yet to require a discussion. He'll go back to the city when his vacation is over. I try not to think about it, but we really need to discuss how this relationship will work with him away for work.
I went to visit Lee and Cara. Mainly, I wanted to talk to Cara to know what it's like waiting for Cody for months, whereas I wanted Lee's opinion on what it's like for the other person who's always away.
"You think too much. It's like any other job. Wait, that's not right..." Lee started. Cara snorted and nudged her. We're huddled on the table outside.
"They're staying right here while Gabe would be in the city. It's not easy to travel here and there. Have you asked how often he will come back?" Cara asked.
"Not really. We haven't talked about it yet. I don't want to say the wrong things. I'm afraid I would push him away if I react adversely. That would be bad."
"Why would you react adversely?" Lee raised an eyebrow. Looking at her felt like looking at Gabe. He's right; Keith has the same eyes as Lee, but her expression is like Gabe's. One they acquired through training, it seemed.
"I know it's normal to get attached to him, since we're already married and we do love each other. But the thought of being apart doesn't sit well with me. I kept thinking about you and Cody and why he can't do the same. I want him to stay, but I also understand it's what he needs to do and wants to do. I'm afraid I would beg him and I might drag Keith into the mix."
They looked at each other before turning back to me.
"Do you want me to give him a heads up?" Lee offered and I sighed. Is that really necessary? Why am I even torturing myself?
"You know, I think it's best to talk about it while you guys still have more months to spend together. Get it out of the way so you can enjoy the rest of his vacation." Cara suggested.
"I could agree to that. As soon as I recovered my memories and I knew I'm going to go back, I told Oliver about it. It wasn't easy, but as long as both of you are supportive of each other, and understanding of each other's situation... it's nothing to worry about."
"Besides, you guys can video chat any day when he goes back. Unless he's doing undercover." Cara added.
"It's ironic that we keep talking about how important communication is and yet that's where we..." Lee didn't have to continue. That's where we all stumble. But as long as we talk it out in the end, things will be fine. Which means...
As I served dinner, I called them to eat. They were only watching television. As soon as they were seated, I opened the topic. Keith deserves to participate.
Gabe doesn't look uncomfortable, though.
"We've already settled that I have to go. If you have anything to say, any requests, just say it. I'll see if we can make it work or not." He replied and Keith started scooping dishes.
"You'll keep in touch, right?" He asked as he passed the bowl of rice to his father, who passed it to me instead.
"Yes. But if I'm unable to reply or answer your call, please understand that it might simply be not a good time. When I go undercover, most likely Gerry would be having my phone. If I can, I will give you a heads up on when I'll go off-grid. If I can't, I'll see if I can get Gerry to agree to reply to you."
