We drove around the curved road and came to a slow stop once we pulled off onto the shoulder of the road. Flicking on the light inside the car, I smirked over at my boyfriend.
"Soo, your plan was to take me somewhere creepy." I joked with him.
"Nicole, everyone does this. Cannon road is the road, the place to sneak out with your girlfriend and do something... If you know what I mean." The corner of his lips upturned as he finished his lewd statement before gently caressing my thigh.
"Jason, I don't know, this is way too creepy. Look around. We're practically in the middle of nowhere." I insisted on, taking in the dim surroundings. The moonlight reflected from the wide lake right by us and an occasional vehicle would fly by, but other than that, we were completely alone.
"Babe, you're totally killing the buzz." Jason replies with a huff, leaning back into his seat. I placed my fingers against my temples, silently wishing to myself that this night would just be over already. I know Jason was just trying to fix the rough patch between the two of us, but this had to be the absolute worst way to go about doing it. So we instead sat in silence while his radio played some slow music. A few moments pass by and a vehicle pulls up behind us with music blasting and out jumped a guy and a girl, but once they walked closer I realized it was just our friends.
"What a coincidence seeing you two here." My friend Amber, said while hopping onto the step up to the passenger side window where I sat.
"What have you guys been up to?" Jason questioned his friend, who stood by his side.
"Partying, fooling around and now messing with you two." Ryan replied to Jason with a mischievous smirk.
"Heyyy, have you guys heard about this road? I'm shocked you guys are even sitting here right now." Amber says. Jason and I exchanged looks, confused by the lack of context Amber hadn't offered.
"Do what now?" I asked.
"Uhh, the bandage man? Don't tell me you guys haven't heard of him!" Ryan exclaims with a cackle.
"Really? The bandage man? That even sounds lame." Jason replies, though I squirm in my leather seat at the mere thought.
"Once long ago, a man who worked as a lumberjack took his daily trip over to a nearby sawmill to cut some logs, but little did he know it'd be his last trip." Ryan dramatizes the story, moving his hands up and wiggling his fingers.
"How long is this going to take? I wanna go home." I interrupted, but was abruptly shushed by Amber.
"He had then been cut into pieces by this sawmill! People say it was no accident, others say it was. Whatever happened, he is still seen today walking around and hitching rides with people that come down this way. He explains darkly, "His flesh is rotting so badly that you can still smell it.".
I scrunched my nose up. "That is so gross."
"Gnarly." Jason says with a chuckle before I give him a smack on his chest.
"Well, anyway, We better go torment some more people out there." Ryan shrugged his shoulders before Amber met him around our truck, grasping each other's hands.
"Don't let the bandage man catch a ride with you." Amber says with a cackle before the two of them run off and back into their car, zooming down the road while Ryan honks his horn repeatedly.
"Can you take me home? After their stupid story, I don't wanna be here anymore." I say, caressing my arm up and down with my hand.
"Yeah, we'll go." He says with a frown. As he turns his truck back on, a loud thump sounds from the bed of his truck.
"What was that?" I whispered aloud. As we glanced back, we saw white, but it was too dim to discern anything. Then suddenly, a thumping on his back windows came next as if whoever it was were trying to get inside the truck with us. Or, for us.
"Jason, drive!" I yell at him in frustration. Finally, he turns the keys and we fly down the road and through the curves, though the pounding from the back of the truck still persists.Eventually, the sounds slowed down before one last thud could be heard as we left the area. We pulled into Jason's driveway as he turned off the ignition and we both looked at one another, too afraid to even think about getting out.
"Can I stay the night?" I asked him.
He nods, "Yeah, course. So, uhm-you wanna get out?"
I furrowed my eyebrows together at him, "Me? Why don't you get out first, you chicken."
"I-fine." He says, slowly opening up the door. Once he landed on the grass, he spun around.
"Anything out there?" I asked him.
"I think we're—oh, oh that's grody." He begins to cough and soon even gag. I jumped out of the truck quickly and realized what he meant. The stench in the air was that of rotting flesh, and it was suffocating my nose.
"Oh, this is what Ryan was talking about." I said through my own coughs now. We made our way around to the bed of the truck and opened it up to see no man in sight. Although there was one thing I noticed before Jason could spot it. Carefully, I crawled into the bed and picked up pieces of a bloodied bandage, yet the blood was a shade of brown. I turned around to show Jason the bandage next.
"Maybe it was the bandage man after all."
