Duérmete niño, duérmete ya...
Que viene el Coco y te comerá
Sleep child, sleep now...
Else Coco comes and will eat you.
I stood in the tight hallway of the home while my mom kissed my younger brother goodnight.
"Sleep now Daniel or else the cucuy will come." She warns him in her soft tone before leaving his room and turning the lights off.
"So?" I repeated.
She huffs, crossing her arms together, "You're still on about that?"
"I promise we won't be out long, we were just gonna walk around the town and chill out at the benches. Please?" My whiny voice came out as I pleaded with her.
"Fine, Angel! But you come back home by eleven thirty and if not, el cucuy will come for you next." She threatens before walking into her bedroom, slamming the door.
I smirked, "I'm sixteen, that don't work on me anymore." I replied before getting my phone to text my friends to pick me up.
"Come pick me up, my mom says I have to be back by eleven thirty though." I texted. My friends in the group chat immediately read it together before responding back.
"Dude your mom is so strict." My friend Lucas texts.
"That's fine, we're walking your way now." My other friend Martin replies.
"You ain't scared that the cucuy will get you, are you Angel?" Lucas texts. I rolled my eyes, texting back immediately.
"Oh shut up Lucas, at least I don't play with dolls." I replied back with an insult.
"Hey, that's because my little sister wants me to, alright!?" He responds. I chuckled to myself and decided to go sit outside on the front patio to wait. The three of us repeatedly messed with each other on the walk, either messing up Lucas's gelled up hair or punching each other in the shoulders after having an insulting joke thrown at one of us.
"Man, I don't even pee the bed no more. Why you gotta bring that up again?" Lucas whines before he throws his shoulder up, pushing our hands away from him.
"Dude, because it was so funny! You peed the bed at your girlfriend's house! Even she couldn't stop laughing." Martin began erupting with childish laughter while he remembered the incident.
"I was twelve man, I was still a kid." Lucas snapped back, his eyes narrowing at Martin who wouldn't stop cackling about it.
"Just leave him alone, Martin, he's not having it." I say in an attempt to calm Lucas down. We'd been best friends since we were little and knowing Lucas, he was the angry one. He'd get mad at just about anything.
"Lucas is fine, ain't ya Lucas?" Martin asked but Lucas stopped dead in his tracks causing me to bump into his back. Martin stopped and stared at Lucas who kept his eyes on something that hid in the darkness of the night.
"Yo, what's up Lucas? Martin, apologize." I snapped at Martin who threw his hands up.
"Man, I'm sorry. I didn't mean nothing by it." Martin apologized.
"No, I-I don't care about that." Lucas stumbled over his sentence before looking away and back to us, shaking his head and blinking hard.
"You alright?" I asked him.
"Yeah, just thought I saw something. We gonna hang at the park benches?" He asks, leading us to the wooden benches that sat underneath an awning. Once we all sat down, we always took in our surroundings first to make sure we were safe and alone. The streetlight sat across the park and due to how old the bulb inside was, it didn't do much of a job at keeping the surrounding area of the park lit so the three of us sat on the creaky wooden benches in almost complete darkness."I saw that girl at your house the other day, she's pretty cute." Martin says to Lucas.
"What girl?" Lucas questions.
"Your mom." Martin jokes, but Lucas didn't laugh back. Instead, he jumped up from the bench and started hitting Martin in the shoulders and arms over and over while Martin begins to laugh, then start wincing.
"Dude, too much!" Martin yells before suddenly slapping Lucas across the face. The sound of impact made me flinch and I widened my eyes when I looked over to the two who both froze in surprise.
"What's your issue?" Lucas asks, caressing his cheek with his hand before sitting back down onto the bench by Martin.
"I told you it was too much, my arms are sensitive!" Martin scolded, defending himself. They started kicking each other with their feet now as they sat, each time harder than the last. For some reason, they weren't entertaining me tonight with their shenanigans.
"Can you dorks stop!?" I hollered and they both snapped their head towards me, pouting.
"What crawled in your pants, Angel?" Martin snapped. As I went to respond, I spotted something moving just behind them in the trees.
"Uhm- guys..." I whispered, pointing directly behind them. They both turned to look and seen what I was pointing at. Something dark, but had long limbs and was crawling on all fours. Nowhere near looking like a dog though. Then, we heard it.
"Cuu-cuuy!" It softly let out the strange noises each time it moved around behind the trees.
"I'm getting outta here." Martin mumbles before running away from the benches and down the dim streets, nearly tripping over his shoes as he did so. As Lucas and I sat in fear while we watched this creature move around, the dogs in town began barking wildly as if they were warning us of something evil.
"It's-it's el cucuy." Lucas shakily whispered. I glanced down at my phone that sat in my lap, seven texts from my mom. Then I noticed the time, 11:58 pm. I looked back up and saw the creature more visibly now as for it stood directly in front of us. Hair everywhere, like a gorilla. He growled lowly and that's when I remembered my mother's saying earlier. If I don't get back home at eleven thirty, the cucuy will come to get me. I'd disobeyed her and now I was going to pay for it.
