Chapter 35

Chase

I lean against the wall, outside the bathroom door. Liam’s already been in there for the past twenty minutes. He was either taking a long shit, or he was crying his eyes out.

From the smell of things, it was more than likely that my best friend was hiding his sorrows.

My mind flicks back to the weirdness of it all. The tension of the entire situation. Hazel Eyes had seemed off, and I didn’t know Mr. Scott that well but he seemed that way too. That niggling feeling inside of me, told me that something dangerous was afoot. But it wasn’t like Mr. Scott had seemed inclined to hurt Hazel Eyes. And its not like Hazel Eyes had any intention of hurting Mr. Scott.

I pause at that thought. Something not sitting right. Something was wron-

The door swings open in front me and straighten. My focus on my best friend, who startles at the sight of me. He rolls his reddened eyes, as he calms from his fright, annoyance flickering on his face, before it falls away, and is replaced by deep sorrow.

“I don’t need the talk, Chase. I have heard it too many times already.” He rolls his eyes and shake his head.

I give my own nod. “Doesn’t hurt to hear it again.” I put a hand on his shoulder and gently squeeze, while trying to meet his eye.

“You’re an amazing man Liam. And any person out there. Man or woman, would be the luckiest to have you.” His jaw clenches, as his shoulders slump, disappointment written all over his features.

“He just dumped me, right? That wasn’t just all in my head?”

“He needs time Liam, and I admire him for telling you like it is. He has shit to figure out.”

Liam swallows and nods.

” I knew better. I did. A married man with a family. Despite the problems in the marriage. But…” he shakes his head, gritting his teeth.

He looks up at me, his eyes glossy with tears. “Dammit I like him a lot Chase. Like, more than anyone ever. I know I fall for people pretty quickly, but I’m sure, that he was…he is perfect for me.”

He palms his forehead. “Fuck. I’m so stupid.” His voice breaks.

I use my hand to bring him closer. I tug him to me and embrace him.

“You’re okay Li. I’ve got you.” His hand tightens on my shirt, as he silently cries.

I rub his back, content with being the shoulder he cried on. The fall outs of Liam tendency to give his heart away was pretty common, but he also tended to bounce right back. Getting labeled as a player with just how quickly he went searching for love again.

This time though, I had a feeling that it may be different.

I don’t know how long we stand there for, but its long enough for him to pull himself together, dry his eyes and give me a wobbly smile.

“Better?” I ask. Liam sniffs and chuckles.

“Barely.” He groans.
