Chapter 17
Ava
The drive is quiet. With the radio on and my nerves fraying. All the while Chase kept glancing at me, and I him. We glanced but didn't speak.
For the first time in my life, I felt nothing like the assassin Father had made me.
I was filled with nervous energy, that had never been in my strengthen body before. I was heading into the unknown, and I was completely unprepared. If my siblings had seen what I had become, I would have been jumped. Hacked at with knifes and jabbed with punches. Our form a teasing, I suppose.
My fingers twitched in my lap, as I again glance over at Chase, this time catching his eyes. I turn away quickly, unsure why I felt heat at my neck. I focus my eyes on the window, watching the housing thin out, and the bustle of the city slightly beginning to fade.
Drum like taps, bring my eyes back to Chase. He bobs his head, as he follows the beat of the song playing on the radio.
It's when he opens his mouth to sing, that it has my eyes widening, in surprise. His voice isn't all that great, as it misses the notes and keys, but its pleasing to me regardless. What was even more shocking were the song's lyrics, as they grow with sound from Chase's lips.
"I'll Never Forget you/They said we'd never make it."
He belts, making me startle. I find myself biting my lips, and his shoulders begin to roll to the beat.
His hand reaches out, and he turns up the volume a bit. He looks over at me, wiggles his eyebrows, while I continue to watch him with wide eyes of surprise.
"I'll Never forget you/ Your my joy/ always remember me."
He sings, with his eyes on me before turning back to the road.
I find my lips curling, as I watch him. He wiggles about in his seat. Before moving his hand to drum in time with the music, on the steering wheel, before turning it, and swinging our bodies in a wide turn. The road is clear and gives him room to do so.
A noise escapes me. One that shocks me. Its loud enough to be heard over the music, and when Chase looks over at me again, he grins wide.
I find pain in my cheeks, as the song closes, and Chase slows down in a wide, and mostly empty parking lot.
My cheeks are still in pain, and I figure out why as we come to a stop. I'm smiling. Widely. One that was sincere. I try to rid myself of it, but looking at Chase, as he turns the car off with a grin of his own. I find that I can't.
"You know, you're one of the lucky ones." He says looking over, his grin still in place.
I scoff. Wrestling with my amusement, my smile finally wilting.
"And how so?"
"I mean, you got a free concert."
"It wasn't welcomed." I drawled back.
Chase laughs. "No but it was worth it by the end I bet."
I huff, and reach for the door, handle, letting myself out. But as I leave, I feel that pain in my cheeks again.
I roll my shoulders, trying to rid myself of the strange tingles happening about my body.
I look around, finding a small booth, in front of an almost warehouse like building.
There were signs with arrows, directing, into the thicket of trees just up ahead. Its green and brown almost everywhere here. I see the bloom of colors, hidden by the wild bushes.
