Tsk... So, that one is eleven minutes late. No surprise, I haven't seen her up before midday... Ah, why do I have to do this?!
— Hey, foureyed! When's that twat thinking to show up for her class?
— Levi, I am not responsible for her schedule, so no idea.
— It was you who thought it would be "fun" to make me teach her to ride a horse. So, why am I wasting my time now?
— Good morning, guys! — you shouted from the fence entering the hippodrome. In the middle of it there were two slim figures dressed in their common beige uniform that you happened to hate so much ten minutes ago when you were to put it on instead of your stylish clothes you'd brought to the island from overseas. — Didn't you have anything else for me to wear? I don't like beige, it doesn't work with my skintype... Do you have anything in navy blue? It will highlight my eyes!
— You're late. Quit complaining.
— Always a pleasure to see you, captain Levi. Looking great today. Well, just as usual!
— Flattery will get you nowhere. I'm not forgiving with those who come late for my class.
— Yeah... (Y/N), you should be more accurate with timing. Levi is very busy and it's so lucky for us that he agreed to train you.
— I never agreed. You ordered me, Hanji, — captain Levi seemed even angrier than ever before and didn't shift his grey eyes from you. Although, you were three inches taller than him, right now, under his solid gaze you felt like a tiny little girl that did something terribly wrong. Like came late for a very important class, for example.
— Anyway, you guys have fun, I'll leave you be.
With this words commander Hanji, that's become your close friend recently, left your sight. And then there were only two of you. In this bright calm morning, you were standing opposite a short black-haired man whose only aim these past two months of your life was to make it an unbearable disaster. Everywhere you went you came across his steady look fixed on you. His chest seemed to breathe in all joy you were spreading around and exhale total hatred towards your whole existence. Spending this lovely morning (that, to be honest, you'd rather happily meet sleeping in your bed) face-to-face with the one person in the world who couldn't stand you definitely wasn't your biggest dream. But here you were, standing silently in the middle of this simple paysan arena.
— For how long are you planning to make me wait? — his eyes not blinking, arms criss-crossed, lips barely moving.
— Ehm.. That's my first lesson of horseback riding ever. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do...
— Run 45 laps around the arena, with a blindfold over your eyes and me throwing knives at you from time to time. That's for starters.
— R-really?
— Tsk, of course not! It's a horseback riding lesson. What do you think? Get a horse!
— So, stables, right?
— If you can make a horse from dirt and water and then ride it, do this. If not — go to the fucking stables.
— Are you sure it's safe for me to let you teach me, captain Levi?
— Less talking, more walking.
You reached the stables on the left side of the arena. The smell of dung and sweat filled your body which made you shiver. You stepped into the stables but the ordure won the fight. You stopped in front of a bay stallion and turned to Levi who waited outside.
— Chose already? Ah, Mist... Well, I feel pity for the poor animal. Get it out.
— How?!
— Oh boy, it's gonna last forever... — Levi whispered to himself while rubbing his nose with obvious irritation. Then he walked into the stables, carefully making a few steps you were brave enough to take, opened the enclosure and let Mist walk out of it. After this, Levi threw a saddle right into your face, without even looking, and went out to the arena, leading Mist by the reins. You had no other choice but to follow these two, with the saddle in your arms and a growing fear in your soul.
— First step is to put a saddle on a horse. I'll do it for you today so that you don't injure Mist. But your homework for tomorrow is to learn to do it yourself. Understood?
— How am I supposed to learn that?
— Watch me and turn on your brains if you got some, — captain Levi went on insulting you for no apparent reason while fixing the saddle on Mist. The horse, by the way, seemed to feel your fear and looked worried to you. Although, you weren't sure that your mind wasn't deceiving you.
— Done. Remembered everything?
— Aha.
— Get on the horse now. Put your left foot here and throw your right leg above the croup while balancing on your arms and the other leg. That's the easiest thing here. Even a stupid child can do it.
Listening to the directions of your master, you attempted to approach the horse. Right when you slightly touched Mist and raised your left leg, the horse let out a loud neigh and reared up only to begin galoping around. You fell on the ground and hurt your wrist while wondering why the hell you ever mentioned to Hanji that you always dreamt to learn how to ride a horse. Your first lesson wasn't going smoothly. Sitting on the ground and feeling the specks of dust tickling your nose, you turned to ask Levi for some help but found him already exiting the arena.
— Jean! — the captain shouted. — I can't do this anymore. Tend to Mist and if you're capable, teach that idiot to ride a horse. I give up.
Next four weeks you spent learning how to ride a horse every goddamn morning. Was it a "fun" experience? Well, for your teachers and spectators it certainly was. No matter how hard it was for you, no matter how much every single bone in your body ached, no matter how bright the sun would shine over your gracious falls and screams, you kept showing up for classes. Those who watched were really having a lot of fun. But no doubt. You were extremely pretty, always smiling, always happy to see and warmly greet everyone (no exclusions, not even for constantly grumpy and somewhat scary captain Levi), always smelling fine and not as a stinky sweaty horse (well, sure, you brought here so many bottles and creams and soaps the islanders have no idea how to use), always knowing what to say and when (no wonder, you were taught to read even before you could talk). Yeah, that's what you were telling yourself when another one of your falls was greeted with lots of encouraging cheers from behind the fence. Many people enjoyed watching your performance, and a bunch of guys showed much interest in teaching a "cocky Marleynian whore that's never seen a horse in her entire life well can you imagine that" how to conquer Mist. The stud turned out to be a stubborn one (just like you, right?) and refused to participate in the classes as well (though, its opinion was never taken into anyone's account).
When Commander Hanji learned that Levi threw a tantrum at your first practice and left you suffocate on dust (your words, of course, not his), she made him show up to each of your classes and watch from a distance while some cadet or soldier would desperately help you mount your horse. Yes, he wasn't teaching you directly, only screaming at you and cursing every time Mist refused to jump over an obstacle (and you, on the other hand, refused to force the poor animal). God knows if Levi's teaching methods were fruitful but you were more than happy to finally here him say: "That's it. We're done. Everyone, get back to your duties. She can now ride a fucking horse. Big deal". The excruciating lessons of hurting you legs, spine and dignity were over and you could return to never talking to him again. At least, that's what you thought when that night you went to bed early just to wake up in a few hours in cold sweat with a disturbing realisation of your irrational but strong feelings for captain Levi.
