𝓨ou and your brother, now using the alias Loid, head to one of the local orphanages to adopt a child for the mission. If you were to be honest, you were on the fence about bringing in an innocent child into this mission.
Why couldn't you just infiltrate the school by yourself with your brother pretending to be your guardian? What would happen to the child after the mission was complete? Do you give them back? What if they find out your true identities.
The storm of thoughts ended when a balding man, clearly intoxicated, opened the front door of the building.
"Hello, we are the Forgers" your brother greeted.
"Huh?" The drunk owner said. "You want to foster a kid?"
"Actually we're wanting to adopt," you pipe up. "My brother and sister in law have been-"
"Whatever." The owner cut you off, walking back into the building. "Pick whichever on you want."
Your eye twitches slightly as his rude behavior but you do your best to quell your annoyance. The two of you follow the man inside down the hall where many children sit on the floors playing with various toys. They all watched you and Loid curiously, probably not accustomed to seeing other adults around.
This specific orphanage was a bit more on the shadier side. You weren't surprised that the owner was drunk on the job and wouldn't be surprised if there were other violations being broken. You couldn't help but feel pity for some of these kids. Who knows what they've been through.
"I must focus," you scold yourself. "Brother's mission is to create a family. I cannot let personal feelings intervene. I must do my part effectively."
"Um if possible," Loid says. "I would like a kid who can read and write."
"Yeah? I know just the one," the owner says. He leads the two of you to a separate bed room where a small pink haired child plays with a small stuffed animal. "Hey Anya-"
At the call of her name, she quietly looks up. She stares curiously at you and your brother.
"Awe...her rosy cheeks are so cute," you internally gush. Anya suddenly hides her face behind her plush animal that looks like something between a lion and a lizard.
"She's our smartest kid. Doesn't say much but she's a good child," the owner explains. "Come over here Anya and say hi."
Anya stands and hesitantly walks over to the two of you. Now that she was standing, she looked quite young. Perhaps four? Maybe five at best? A silent look shared between you and Loid confirmed you were thinking the same thing.
"Um excuse me, but-" your brother starts.
"Six," Anya suddenly speaks up.
"Huh?"
"Six," Anya repeats.
"You were six huh?" The owner said. Your eyes narrow at him.
"You mean to tell me you don't even know basic information about the kids here?" You say, a bit harsher than you intended.
"Y/n..." your brother says in a warning tone.
