"You want me to pretend to be your boyfriend?" Loid asks the woman, Yor.
Anya holds on to the end of your skirt, hiding slightly behind your legs. Your eyes narrow as you study the black haired woman. She was pretty, you wouldn't lie. A tad bashful, but it unsettled you in a way you couldn't explain
"That's right..." Yor stammered. "I told my brother I had a boyfriend, So if it's not too much of a bother, would you accompany me to a party this weekend?"
You wanted to scoff. She was lying to her brother? And she doesn't seem to be good at it. While you don't condone lying, as a spy, it was inevitable. So if you are going to lie, make sure it's solid and you won't get caught.
"I-I don't have an ulterior motives," Yor continued. "I can pay you if need be. I just don't want my brother to worry about me..."
"Brother-" You look to Loid. His focused solely on Yor.
"Very well. I accept," he says. You gawk in shock.
"Brother!"
He gives you a stern look and you go quiet. "I'll do it on one condition." He faces Yor. "My late wife wanted nothing more for our daughter to attend Eden College. And since I never could attend a decent school, I wanted my kid sister to have a better opportunity at success. They've both passed the first part, but the second portion is a family interview. Therefore, in exchange I'd like you to play the mother in the interview. It was my wife's dying wish and I want my sister to have the best possible future!"
You and Anya both deadpan at your brother's blatant lie. "Does he think we're stupid?" You wonder. But Yor seems completely smitten, moved by his words. "No...it's just everyone else."
"I-I understand!" Yor agrees. "I'll do my best."
Loid smiles. "Thank you. I'll see you at the party on Saturday."
.。.:*☆___★___☆*:.。.
Saturday comes sooner than you'd like. You're forced to play babysitter while your brother tries to complete a quick heist mission before meeting Yor at the party. Not only were you missing out on the thrill of an assignment, you got stuck watching spy cartoons with Anya that only reminded you of your misery.
"This sucks..." you internally grumble. You've long tuned out the show, wallowing in your own thoughts. "I like spending time with Anya, but I really wanted to keep an eye on that Yor woman...something about her rubs me the wrong way. Can a ditzy woman like her really be that troublesome? Maybe I'm just on edge cause of Operation Strix and my own assignment..."
Unknown to you, your jumble of thoughts started to affect Anya. The girl cringed and her nose began to bleed.
"Auntie-" She swayed dizzily.
You finally noticed the child in distress. "H-hey what's wrong?" You grab a tissue and press it to her nose to try to stop the bleeding. "Do you have allergies or something? Geez..."
"Auntie," Anya says. "Do you not want Papa to get married?"
The question confuses you. You frown and toss the tissue into the nearby trash. Did you not want Loid to get married? The thought hadn't really crossed your mind. You knew the mission entailed him to do so, so why were you all bothered by him going out with Yor?
"Brother- Your Papa and I," you start, "have always been alone." It was always just you two. Fending for yourselves. Relying on one another just to get by. Doing what you can to survive in a shitty world. But, that was slowly changing now. Fake family or not...the dynamic of just you and Loid was different, whether you wanted it to or not.
