HQ, Commander Hick's office
"Luca, somebody in line 1 for you." called Officer Fowler as she stuck her head in the door. Luca was completing the mission's paperwork, exactly the part he hated the most about being a Commander. Instead of finishing the usual single set of documents, like all other officers, as a Commander he had two stacks plus the documentation of each member of his squad. He was so annoyed that her voice was actually a breath of fresh air.
"Thanks Nora!" he called as she moved on, and he approached the phone. He clicked the speaker button, and began, "Officer -I mean- Acting Commander Luca talking. Who is this?" he greeted
"Dang! Commander? I like the sound of that! Congrats, Luca!" the voice answered happily
"Thanks! Officer Tamen? Tony? Is that you? What's up, man?" Luca answered, staring at his stack of papers, still undone. He remembered Tony from Street's patrol days. He was Jim's patrol partner when he was kicked out of SWAT.
"Actually, it's Lieutenant Tamen now" the man giggled, as Luca praised him, "You're not the only one goin' up the ranks!"
After a small chit chat, the man continued, "Listen, I got a call from dispatch. A 4-2-5 reported in St Agustin Memorial Hospital... possible altercation between two officers. Hospital is thin on security because of a rush of incoming patients from a multiple car crash at Lexington."
Luca was kind of lost as to why he was being told about this. He stayed quiet as Tamen continued, "I don't know, I thought you might want to take it. The altercation is in room 1720, patient is Officer Christina Alonso" Luca's jaw dropped to the floor, and his eyes bulged out. He had been moving papers around, just to classify the done with the undone, but now... he froze. Oh my God.
"Suspect's description is of a white male, short brown hair, muscular built, wearing SWAT uniform. Please tell me that's not my guy, Street!"
Luca didn't have a chance to answer because he was interrupted by Deacon and Hondo, who came in with their paperwork on the day's mission.
The officers stopped short as they noticed Luca's shocked expression. "What's going on, Luca?" Hondo asked
Luca turned to them, then shouted "Hey Luitenant. We'll take it from here. Show 20 and 30 David responding. Thanks!" Deacon and Hondo looked at him with deep frowns, as the commander just clicked the dial button. He turned to the staring officers and ordered, "Guys, hospital. NOW!"
St. Agustin Memorial Hospital, 25 minutes later
"Chris?" Street said as both had given themselves 5 full minutes of silence, just to regroup.
Chris made it back to her bed, and was now sipping some water from a bottle that her aunt Helena had left for her in the small night stand next to her bed. She was so agitated that her hands were still trembling and her lungs were still recovering.Street was still standing in front of the feet of the bed, hands on his hips, pacing back and forth nervously.
"I'm sorry. I-" he paused as he stared at her, "-I panicked." He swallowed hard, as he made his way to the right side of her bed.
"Street, I get it...what hurts is that you were so selfish you made the decision without me. You wiped away any rights that I had to make a decision for myself!" she lowered her gaze to her hands, which rested on her lap, as she sat up right in her bed, "You're no better than the monsters that stole everything from me when I was a teenager!"
"No, Chris. Please! I beg you, please don't think of me like that-"
"Just like them" she interrupted "you didn't care about me at all. How it would make me feel! You stole my ability to think.. to speak...to make up my mind! You violated every right that I worked so hard to get back. I just-"
