Katya reluctantly went back to work in late April. She hated to be away from her girlfriend and her baby for an entire day, but it was inevitable. She was always impatient to get back home, and felt like a high schooler waiting for the bell to ring.

"How's my family?" Katya greeted as she joined Trixie who was sitting by the pool with Alina.
"Good. How was your day my love?"
"Fine I guess. Foreman still thinks he's the boss, and Kutner keeps asking about you and our baby."
"Aw I miss them. They were all so nice to me from the start" Trixie said wistfully, her eyes staring into space.
"As soon as we can put her in daycare you'll come back. I know it must be hard to be the housewife, I talked to Cuddy about it but she said it would be too messy to have us come alternately."
"Yes I understand. Oh, I think she wants you" Trixie giggled seeing how Alina was making grabby hands towards Katya. The older woman took her in her arms and they kept on talking until they were both hungry.

Katya's birthday was coming up, and even though she didn't really like to celebrate it or receive gifts, Trixie wanted to do something for her. She knew her girlfriend, and Katya actually liked attention, she was just shy about it. On the first of May, Trixie did everything for Katya, like a quickie right after waking up and making breakfast for them. It wasn't ideal that her birthday was on a work day, but it gave Trixie some time to prepare a perfect dinner for when her girlfriend would come back. The first thing she did when Katya left was tidying up the house. She then picked out her lingerie and outfit for the night, and brought some toys from the bathroom to the bedside table. Trixie played with Alina the rest of the day until she had to start cooking.

When Katya's team arrived in the office, they all wished her a happy birthday, and Foreman gave her a box of chocolate from them. Katya instinctively wanted to throw it away to stay in tune with her mean attitude, but she knew Trixie wouldn't appreciate this behavior. So instead of being her usual obnoxious self, she thanked her assistants and shared the chocolates with them while talking about their patient. It was hard for Katya to accept nice gestures from others, because she strongly believed that she didn't deserve any kindness.

Katya also had to forget her old habits when Cuddy and Wilson gifted her a red men's cut shirt with gold cuff links. It was a great present, and she hated that her friends were so nice when all she did was being unbearable. She knew the change to be made was inwards, and it was a work in progress since she met Trixie. Somehow this woman had fell in love with her, and it was still crazy to Katya that someone like her found the now forty-year-old lovable.

At around half past six pm Trixie heard the front door open and rushed downstairs. She shook her freshly curled hair a little and smiled at Katya.
"Hey babe" She said wrapping her arms around her girlfriend's back.
"Hi cutie. You're absolutely gorgeous" Katya replied, letting her eyes wander all over Trixie. She was wearing a pink gathered short dress that accentuated her curves, a pair of small white heels and jewelry Katya bought her. The younger blonde blushed like she always did when her girlfriend looked at her with this intense gaze.
"Thank you love. Let's go outside"
"Wait, I wanna see Alina" Katya beamed at the prospect of seeing her baby. Trixie nodded, and her heart was filled with gratitude from the knowledge that no one could be a better mom than her girlfriend.

They went upstairs and spent some time with the little girl, and Katya showed her gifts to Trixie. She tried the shirt on and it fit perfectly. The fabric was tight around her strong arms, which Trixie found incredibly hot. The two women waited until Alina was asleep to start their at-home date. Katya complimented Trixie the entire evening for the food and the lovely decorations she put up. There were fairy lights around the bushes and trees, a big bouquet of red roses on the table, and the brazier was lit up. Katya had never had something like this organized for her, and it made her emotional to think that Trixie prepared all of this only to make her happy. When the dinner was over, they laid on the outdoor bed next to the brazier and fed each other melted marshmallows and s'mores. It quickly became messy, and they sloppily made out to remove the candy that got stuck on their lips.

"Stay here" Trixie whispered before getting back inside. She joined Katya again and handed a folder to her with jittery hands. The blonde raised an eyebrow and thanked her lover.

"Happy birthday Kat. I love you" Trixie said fondly.
"I love you babygirl. Tonight was the best night of my life" Katya replied, opening the paper bag and pulling out a bunch of sheets. She frowned in confusion and started reading the administrative text. An audible gasp left her lips when she understood what it was about, and tears built up in her eyes.

"Trixie..." Katya brokenly called. She held the adoption papers tightly in her hand and hugged her girlfriend just as tight.
"I had no idea how you would be with Alina, and I'm so glad you've been a real mom for her since the beginning. I want her to be your baby legally" Trixie explained. A lot of emotions hit her at once and her voice wavered a bit.
"You're wonderful. I love you both so so much. I'm so proud to have a family, I always thought I would spend my fortieth birthday alone"
"You won't ever be alone again, I'm here. I love you" Trixie smiled. She kissed Katya's cheeks and lips, and they fell back against the mattress.

Katya wondered why a girl like Trixie was in love with her, but she made a promise to herself to cherish her until her dying day. The two women stayed outside and cuddled as they enjoyed the warmth of the fire and the starry sky.

The adoption process was long and strenuous, but when all was done, Alina was officially Trixie and Katya's daughter. They were both crazy about the little girl, and gave her as much love as possible. The two mothers had a hard time leaving Alina at daycare once she was old enough, but Trixie eventually had to work again. Katya's crew was back at full staff, and all the teammates were glad that Trixie had joined them a few months ago. Since then Katya was no longer grumpy and ready to argue with anyone. She listened, considered her colleagues ideas, and even if she still had unruly habits to solve her cases, the work atmosphere improved greatly. Katya became a better person, thanks to her girlfriend.
