Sayu was 12 when she found it. Leaving school late, she saw a small black notebook submerged in a puddle; there wasn't anyone around. She'd gotten out of detention for cheating on her maths test; it wasn't her fault she wasn't good at maths; she wasn't like her brother, much to her parent's disappointment, always complaining about her Bs and Cs instead of getting straight As like Light. Light, her older brother, had stolen all the intelligence genes from the gene pool, that was for sure. So, to get good grades, she needed to cheat, not that she was sneaky enough to get away with it, hence her detention. All her friends had left hours before Kinamoto sensei finally let her go after re-taking the tests and making her do other complicated mathematical questions. She could already picture the red F sitting at the top of her paper.
Staring down at the book, Sayu was tempted to leave it where it was. It wasn't her, and she didn't care about reuniting it with its owner; however, the writing caught her attention. It wasn't in Japanese but in English. Languages weren't her forte, so she couldn't read the words, but it made her curious enough to know what was written inside. He doubted it belonged to anyone at school; they had no foreign or mixed-race students or teachers. So, potentially against her better judgment, Sayu picked up the notebook. To her surprise, it wasn't wet, considering it was sitting in a puddle. It didn't help diminish her curiosity as she opened the notebook. The first few pages were covered in English writing, and the rest were blank.
"I know I shouldn't go through someone's things, but... maybe Light can translate this for me. Just to satisfy my curiosity, then I'll hand it to the police," Sayu muttered to herself before putting the notebook in her bag for safekeeping and walking home. She'd nearly forgotten about it when Light returned from cram school that night until she accidentally knocked her bag over, its contents scattered across her bedroom floor, including the strange black notebook. It seemed to call to her, daring her to pick it up.
"What's that? A Death Note, a little creepy for you, Sayu," Light said. Sayu jumped, nearly dropping the notebook from shock.
"Whatever, Light," Sayu said before trailing off. Why would someone call their notebook a Death Note? Looking at her brother, she decided she had nothing to lose from asking Light to translate the rest.
"I found this outside school today. I doubt it belongs to anyone from school, as all of it is written in English. Why would someone call it a Death Note?" Sayu asked, passing the notebook to her brother. Light opened it, his eyes scanning the first two pages.
"It's probably someone's idea of a joke. According to the "Death Note" rules, if you write someone's name in the notebook, that person will die. This is stupid, Sayu. Whoever made this intended it as a prank," Light said, translating what was said before handing the notebook back to her. Sayu looked down at the notebook, unsure what she should be feeling; the uge she had earlier was gone, so instead, she dumped the notebook in her drawer and promptly forgot about it.
Well, until he appeared.
Ryuk spent the last millennia in constant boredom; nothing in the Shinigami Realm could relieve him of it. Dropping his second Death Note into the human world was his last chance for entertainment. Yet, the person who owned his Death Note - Sayu Yagami, had done nothing with it. She hasn't written any names at all. Ryuk had never met anyone exposed to the Death Note's thrall for five days without being lured in to try it once. What the hell was wrong with her?
Sayu wasn't sure what was happening; a horrifying monster was in her bedroom holding the notebook she found five days ago. His large eyes seemed to stare right through her, freezing her to her spot. She wanted to run, to flee, but she couldn't move.
