*TW MENTIONs OF ABUSE*

The day passed swiftly and was uneventful; the letter I had read this morning still lingered in the back of my mind. It was almost time for dinner, and potions class was nearly over; I had spent most of the class looking at my Professor and getting distracted again. Kara nudged me every few minutes to bring me back down to earth. This had become a frequent thing in Potions, Kara constantly having to get my attention back on the task at hand.

She nudged me again, painfully in the ribs this time; Snape had stood up and began saying something, "Please review the ingredients to the Amortentia potion and write an essay about it, one parchment and a half long. I can't have any of you dunderheads mess it up," he sneered and sat back down as he dismissed us.

"I can't believe he can just insult us; I don't think I've ever had a teacher as terrible as him." Serenity huffed once we got out into the corridor.

"You weren't exaggerating when you told us he was awful, Kara," Sapphire added to Serenity's frustration.

"He's not that bad", I insisted; they shot me a look as if trying to figure out if I had hit my head recently or not.

Kara laughed: "Remember guys? Juniper has a massive crush on the dungeon bat!"

"Juniper, he's gross!" Serenity whined.

"And just plain cruel, did you hear how he picked on that poor Gryffindor kid?" Sapphire said sadly. It was true; Snape was unbelievably cruel to a kid who had made his potion explode. I believe his name was Neville.

We walked into the Great Hall together and sat at the Slytherin table; many Slytherins stopped eating to stare at the four of us; Kara returned their stares with an ugly look. Some started whispering after we sat down and eyeing us with incredible distaste. As if they lost their appetite just by the sight of us.

"Don't worry about them; their pride and meaningless materialistic items are the only things they have; trust me, I'd know," she said and raised her eyebrows.

Most Slytherins were pretty nasty and unfriendly to anyone who wasn't in their house. However, Kara was, for the most part, friendly and caring, although she did have her moments. She wasn't one to take anyone's shit and didn't enjoy harming but had no issues with it if necessary. I would've thought she'd be in Ravenclaw.

Suddenly the Hall got extremely quiet; I noticed Dumbledore had gotten up and walked to the podium situated in the middle of the platform.

"I hope you are all enjoying your meals; however, I have an announcement" he paused. "Christmas is almost upon us, and with that comes the Yule Ball, which is held every year on Christmas day; the ball is open for those through the fifth, sixth, and seventh years," he smiled and returned to his seat in the middle of the staff table.

Serenity clutched my arm.

"A ball, Juniper!" she piped excitedly, and I nodded and smiled at her.

"We're going as a group, and if anyone can score a date, them too," Kara said a matter of factly.

"Oh, I think I'll sit this one out," I said softly; the girls all turned to look at me.

"Oh no, you're not Juniper; we're all going together," Kara said, taking a bite of mashed potatoes.

"Yeah, have some fun in your life," Sapphire added; I was defeated, but I've let them drag me into worse, like when we explored an abandoned farmhouse and uncovered a crime scene.

They had already started talking about who they would ask to the dance when Serenity broke my train of thought.

"Say Juniper; you know Cedric, right? I was thinking of asking him" she looked down shyly.
