Unknown Location
Dirt and gravel crunched underfoot an abnormally large wolf, black of coat and with eyes greener than the depths of the sea. Slowly, it padded through the forest with its pointed ears rigid, listening and watching with a slitted, narrow gaze.
Close, very close...
The wolf stepped through the dead foliage with a rustle. Pausing, it raised its snout for a moment before it kept going, taking measured steps before fluidly transforming into a raven haired man with a billowing black cloak.
Poseidon stood in the cool darkness atop the ridge of a towering cliff.
This was his element. He could smell salt and hear the rush of the waves, churning and crashing roughly down in the rocky shore far below. A chilly breeze ruffled his hair and blew away his fogging breath as he looked out at the moonlit sea. The stars were out in full focus tonight, wounding the black sky like beaded string.
It was here.
He could feel it—the potent magical energy thrumming. It was hidden, but not very well. A cover up. Someone was already here, it seemed, and they tried to quickly disguise their presence. He saw through it and sliced a hand down, ripping through the invisible barrier and stepping forward.
There was no time for subtlety.
Conjuring a rope, he tied it to a nearby stump and took timed jumps down to a ledge near the very bottom. It was a perilous descent, but he'd made it to the entrance of a cave. Glowing teal stalagmites provided him a sudden light into the dark tunnel.
Magic sensors, Poseidon surmised. Strange. Whoever wanted to hide the artifact made it somewhat convenient for anyone in search.
If only that were true. The moment he stepped out of the narrow passageway and into an open area, the jagged rocks began to rumble and turn a blazing red. He could feel the heat rising from them. Dangerous and bright.
He smirked. Should've known.
And when the cave began to collapse into itself, he jutted a hand up.
"Arresto Momentum."
The debris stopped its fall, frozen mid air, but the imminent fire, or at least what he assumed would be fire, was about to rage. Just before it could spark to life though, Poseidon filled the walls of the cave with water that rushed from the ocean outside. Steam rose in its stead.
"Well," Poseidon murmured with the hint of a smile. "Since they definitely know I'm here now..."
Dense sea green mist began to swirl up from the ground beneath him, lifting Poseidon into the air and wrapping around his lower body like a cyclone. He loved this trick, but it was too flashy for consistent use so he made sure to milk it this time, flying like smoke on the wind as he sped through the corridors and rock formations with ease.
In his wake, the rest of the traps of similar nature went off with a bang.
The pathway closed behind him with a heart shaking tremor; dust and debris flooded behind him in a cloud. It looked like that exit was blocked off. He'd have to find another way out of this place.
Good thing destruction was his forte.
The last rock formation crumbled before him and Poseidon came to a stop, floating high above another open area in the cavern. It was wide with a high ceiling and tapering stone all around. Trickles of water poured in through the cracks in the walls and a faint blue light emitted from the rocks and spread around the entire place.
