It was a bright and sunny Monday afternoon when I was walking out of The Land in EPCOT. I stopped and pulled out my map and looked at it. I glanced at my watch that I had gotten from my best friend, Malone Zahler. She had gotten it as a get-well-soon present when I was stuck in the hospital after my accident. Shaking my head slightly to clear the memory of seeing one of my other best friends, Kirstin Maldonado, lying motionless on my living room floor. The scene still haunted me to this day. I had no idea whether she had lived or died. All I knew was that I was in Disney and that worrying wasn't doing me any good. I had pushed it away in my head, but the thoughts that she hadn't survived after all kept coming back. Was she alive? The pain from losing her had come to me in multiple ways, which made me think that she hadn't survived the brutal attack by Jason Peterson. Just thinking of the terrible man made me look up and look around for his youngest daughter, Jessica Peterson. Jessica Peterson hated me, especially since Pentatonix asked for my help back in January. As a tremor swept through my body, I turned my attention to my watch.
I had scheduled to meet Malone in Animal Kingdom at 2:30, and it was now 1:30. As I stood there, I suddenly wanted to ride my favorite EPCOT ride, Test Track. Test Track was the fastest ride at Disney World. Its top speed is 65 miles per hour, and it can reach that speed in 8.4 seconds. I checked my watch. I had time, but I would have to hurry if I had enough time to ride it and get to the monorail. I then immediately started to walk toward the ride. As I was about halfway, I stopped when I saw someone that I thought looked like Kirstin. Then the person I had seen turned and I recognized her immediately. I felt my heart skip a beat as I ran to her, and within six strides, I was in Kirstin's arms. Tears of joy ran down my face.
Me: You're alive!
Kirstin simply remained quiet as she held me close. All the uncertainty from the past months evaporated, and my body was shaking from all the relief and joy.
Kirstin Maldonado: Of course I am, Kailyn.
Her voice was calm and comforting. I inhaled her sweet scent as I remembered the last time I had seen her. Back in January, Pentatonix had come and requested shelter. It was a brisk snowy day when they arrived. Kirstin was the one to ask me. They had told me it was because of the winter storm that was on its way into the area. That wasn't the only reason they were there. They had decided to take a little trip and needed a place to stay because there were no hotels or timeshares that allowed them to stay, so they had to rely on the mercy of locals. When she went into a house in a neighborhood, the man led her to the kitchen table, where she went on to tell the man why she was there. He got furious and stood up, then went to a drawer and pulled out a meat fork. He threw the fork at Kirstin, and luckily, it just grazed her. Then when she stood up after a moment or two, he grabbed her forcefully by the wrist and pulled her towards the exit but then thrust her against the stove. In reaction, her hand landed on a pot handle, and the water inside the pot splashed all over her back. The water was scalding hot. It burned her severely, which later caused her to go into shock, making her go into cardiac arrest. After that, he went and acquired a sharp knife. He went to stab her in the back but slipped on the water and stabbed her thigh instead. After he had stabbed her, he dropped the knife and pulled her to the door, throwing her out onto the ice. It bruised her wrist and side and knocked the wind out of her. Then two of her best friends: Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi, came, and they both thought she was dead. They didn't waste any time getting her to the hospital. I hadn't known until that Wednesday night in January. Scott had woken me up in the middle of the night and told me.
I had been troubled by things I had witnessed and heard throughout the week that they were there before I found out from Scott. The next night Kirstin collapsed as she was walking out to the living room. I thought they wanted to get her back to Los Angeles. But why would they come to Disney? I shuddered as I remembered seeing Scott carry Kirstin's limp, motionless body out of my house and their RV. Mitch had stayed with me until he knew that I was okay and could walk. I now stood halfway to Test Track in Kirstin's arms, crying with tears of joy and relief flowing down my face. Kirstin held onto me with the gentleness of a mother holding their newborn baby.
