Only one sound echoes in the room and it is that of the regular beating of her heart. Her eyes are fixed on this branch outside, the foliage is a fiery green and the cloudless sky would almost make her want to play outside. Suddenly her breath stops and her gaze widens at the sight of these few green feathers.
Quickly, she straightens, in a determined gesture. Her blond hair falling on her shoulders. She grabs her sketchbook, the few badly sharpened pencils next to it and wastes no more time. Her eyebrows are furrowed and she put all her concentration in it, sticking her tongue out.
Unfortunately before she can finish her drawing, her eyes are drawn by the sound of the door opening. She would recognize that white coat among a thousand and her gaze glows at the sight of the tray in her father's hands. A smile lit up his face and he placed it on the girl's lap.
Conrad: I got you a muffin, don't tell the nurses or they will end me.
She quickly gestured a zipping movement, closing her mouth tightly. A hand ran through her hair, ruffling it slightly in affection.
Conrad's gaze was drawn onto the white sheet of paper in her hands..
Conrad: What were you drawing ?
The young girl quickly unsheathed the sheet while her father sat down in the chair beside her.
Meryl: A woodpecker !
He took the light paper she held out to him, gently running his fingers over the fine lines drawn by his daughter.
Conrad: A masterpiece as always, you can see he's a clever boy in his eyes.
Meryl: It's a girl, she doesn't have the red here.
Her little fingers tapped the paper to correct him.
Conrad: My bad, Miss bird.
With a simple movement, she grabbed her muffin like a small trophy, crunching a part.
Her father watched with a nostalgic gaze, at the sight of this drawing and her content look. Meryl's big eyes turned to him, mouth full, she tried to say a few words before being caught.
Meryl: When will we get out ?
Conrad slightly raised his eyebrows, a silence passed. His body leaned towards her a little and he spoke again, in that soft voice she was used to.
Conrad: They don't know yet, is it so bad here ?
Meryl: ...Home is better.
He would have struggled to hide the pain in his eyes, his hand passed over the frail and pale skin of the young girl, removing one of the strands of hair she had not taken care to move while eating.
Conrad: I know... We will get out soon, I promise.
Meryl's face scrunched up, she'd heard that phrase enough times that it didn't mean anything anymore. Her head turned to the branch from which the woodpecker had flown off. A gesture from the other side caught her attention again.
Conrad: Little finger ?
The young girl had a little offended look that did not fail to amuse Conrad.
Meryl: That's a very serious thing.
Conrad: I know.
Meryl: Are you SURE ?
Conrad: Yes ma'am.
Meryl: Sure sure sure sure ?
Conrad: Sure sure sure sure.
Meryl: Deal.
