"We can make it if we try."

Just the Two of Us - Bill Withers & Grover Washington Jr

《------》

By this point it was almost 1 PM. Dave had gotten home around an hour ago and still hadn't even taken his shoes off. He just laid face-down on his bed and let his mind wander.

He thought about a lot of things. Most worse than others. It started with his relationship with his brother, then their shitty parents, less than healthy past relationships.

Eventually though, his downward spiral ended up on Jack.

The man was certainly strange (y'know, other than the orange skin), but in a good way. He hadn't even known Jack for a full 3 days, yet he felt sort of at ease around him. It wouldn't take long to find yourself hanging onto every word of a rant or a story he was telling, he had a way with words.

The aubergine turned to lay on his back with a groan, lifting his knees and throwing an arm over his eyes dramatically. After a minute, he finally sat up. Walking over to his closet, he ditched his shoes by the door and grabbed a clean outfit before heading in the direction of the bathroom.

On his way, he stopped at the closet to grab shampoo. Because he realized it's been several days since he washed his hair last. He sighed at this, a little disappointed in himself for forgetting to do something that simple.

He removed his shirt as he reached the bathroom door, stopping and staring at his reflection for a moment. Sighing again, he set the shampoo bottle on the side of the tub and continued taking off his dirty clothes.

The purple man stepped in and turned the water on, flinching when the cold water hit his skin. He backed up with his hand held out and waited for it to warm up. Once it did, he picked up the soap and did what people normally do in a shower, and actually remembered to wash his hair this time.

After finishing up, he hopped out and dried off, throwing on his clean boxers, sweatpants, and t-shirt he'd left on the floor. He cringed as he saw a bit of his chest underneath his shirt. Pulling it up in the front and down in the back, he went on his way. A few steps out of the bathroom and he realized he forgot to brush his teeth, so he turned back around and did that then went to the kitchen to get food.

Standing in the middle of the room, Dave wondered what the hell he had to eat in his house. He settled on toast, not having enough energy to do more than that. As he grabbed the almost finished loaf of bread and the tub of butter from the fridge, his phone rang from his pocket. Groaning, he set his stuff down and answered it without looking at the caller ID.

"Hey man!" Jack's voice came through the receiver, causing the aubergine to perk up. Dave smiled a bit, putting his phone on speaker before responding.

"What's up? Did'ya miss me already?" He asked, going back to preparing his sad excuse of a lunch. He heard the orange man laugh on the other line.

"Nah, just makin' sure you got home safe. Wouldn't want you to kill over or anythin' like that, would we?" Jack replied, stifling his laughter to speak. Dave stood for a moment, zoning out silently.

"Dave?" The tangerine asked, now having a hint of worry in his voice.

Dave cleared his throat awkwardly, grounding himself. "Sorry 'bout that Old Sport, I spaced out. What were ya sayin'?"

The aubergine could feel the hesitation from where he was as Jack spoke, ". . .Nevermind. So what're you up to?" The man seemed to be unfazed by the nickname that had just been appointed to him.

"Lunch," the other man answered simply. As if on cue, his toast popped up. He winced as he removed the two slices from the toaster, muttering curses about how hot they were.

Jack hummed in response. "Whatcha makin?" Dave, forgetting he couldn't be seen currently, gestured towards his plate as he spread some butter on his toast. He quickly realized this and answered properly.

"Just some toast, wasn't feelin' up to makin' something that would require effort." The purple man shrugged as he spoke. He finished up and tossed his knife into the left sink, noting that he needed to wash the dishes at some point in the next day or two.

And so the crayon men spent quite a few hours talking, somehow managing to keep finding conversation topics. It was after eight o'clock by the time they had actually said their goodbyes for the night.

Dave put a hand to his face with a soft smile. He felt a headache coming on due to how much he had talked and laughed, but he didn't mind. Thinking back on the events of that day and the previous one made his head spin, but in a good way.

So here he was again, sitting on his bed with thoughts of a certain orange man filling his mind. He felt his face heat up as he envisioned the man's bright smile.

If he were to be completely honest, he could see himself being the one to cause that smile. It'd make him the proudest man in the world, taking responsibility for a big, bright grin that showed genuine happiness.

He then thought back to how intently Jack had appeared to listen to him when he'd talk. The look of devotion he seemed to give. The aubergine's face grew even hotter at the thought.

Suddenly, the smile dropped from Dave's face as he came to a realization. He flopped backwards on his bed, throwing his hands over his face.

"FUUUUUUUUUUUCK!"

Let's just say he liked Jack more than he had originally planned.

And elsewhere, in a familiar casino, our favourite orange man was being reminded of a similar realization that he'd had, just days prior to today.
