anyone, anyone else

Rose didn't. . . Love camping. Sure, seeing bugs and hanging out with her family was cool, but at the end of the day the cons outweighed the pros, and she'd rather be curled up in bed watching anime than have a meltdown because she couldn't shower and her socks had grass in them and her hair wasn't working with her that day.

Sadly, this school camping trip is mandatory. Like every other yearly school camping trip. And, like every year, Rose spent a majority of the time wishing she was back in her home where she could eat her safe food and only her safe food; staring at the food they offered with disgust; and flapping her hands like a distressed chicken.

However, this year Del came with. It was clear Del had never gone camping before, with them not knowing how to set up a tent, or what to pack, or that jeans are the best when you're camping in areas with long grass. Not that Rose would ever torture herself with jeans.

Her face reddened slightly as she recalled the previous morning, where Del groggily leaned against her with their arms wrapped around her shoulders. Were Del anyone else, Rose would've shoved them off and most likely swear at them until her tongue got tired and a teacher locked her in the storage room as punishment. However, Del is not anyone else. So she let them rest.

Rose curses. Here she was, thinking about pretty... Boygirls, when she was supposed to be sleeping. How irresponsible.

Rose forgave herself, as she remembered the biting cold gnawing at her exposed ankles and the cricket qoir going nuts just outside the thin walls of her tent. Why the fuck camp was always at the start of winter was a mystery to Rose. How could she sleep in such cold? How could anyone sleep in such cold?

She shifted in her sleeping bag. Terrible.

Rose shivered. Cold tendrils climbed up her calves and stroked her bare skin. She curled in on herself and hugged Jiminy closer to her chest. Her arm already buzzed with static, but she couldn't find it in her to care.

The silence was unsettling to her, living in a busy household her entire life. It became overwhelming, pressing on her skull. She felt trapped inside her own head. Rose wanted nothing more than to give in to the pressure behind her eyes and sleep.

Suddenly the silence was interrupted by a tent flap zipping open. The muscles in her body tensed as one. Between the humming of the bugs and the wind screaming at her to let it in, she hears rustling grass. Her pulse rocks. Heavy footsteps with long pauses in between come closer and closer to her tent. Rose pursed her lips and closed her eyes. They pause. She she feels the shadow the looming figure casts even with her eyes closed.

Go away, go away, I don't want to talk to you.

"H-hey. . . Uh Rose? Can I. . . Sleep with you? It's-it's really c-cold and. . . Yeah"

Oh. Rose let's out a breath.
"Del? Why are you up?" She half whisper half shouts, except she doesn't really need an answer. Rose doesn't hear anything in reply but she assumes they shrugged.

She ignores the small voice in the back of her head complaining of the cold while she unzips a small opening. Del is shivering like a newborn kitten at her tent, hunched over and cryptic looking. They sheepishly take their eyes off the grass and meet her gaze. She sees nothing behind their eyes. Why would she? She's not a mind reader, she's a subtitle reader.

They stare at each other briefly before Rose shuffled to the side, inviting them in. Del, not taking the hint, stays staring at her expectantly.

"That means yes, you may me accompany for rest Lilah."
"Oh," they mumble before unzipping a bigger opening and almost falling in next to her. They clumsily zippedp the opening shut, still shivering when they wormed in next to Rose. Had it been anyone else. . .

"Thanks," they muttered. Rose hummed, trying her best to get her heavy ass blanket to cover them both. Not that the heavy part was a bad thing.

They were uncomfortably close together, Del stiff as a board next to her. She doesn't exactly know what she expected to happen when two people climb into the same sleeping bag. Maybe Rose is just stupid. She could feel the heat off their face. Would she? She hesitated for about a second before she stopped caring entirely and pulled Del closer to her.
They tensed.

Neither of them said anything. Eventually, they slid an arm under hers. They shivered again before pressing the entire length of their body against hers. Her face warmed.

"Hopefully we warm up soon," Rose whispered just to say something, and Del nodded against her head. Had it been ANYONE other than Del.

She spent the rest of the night cuddled up against her best friend, thinking about what they would do when they woke, holding hands during prayers, leaning on their shoulder when she was still groggy and could barely keep her eyes open, immediately teaming up in group exercises, making sure they both wore enough layers to make it through the day, cutting tags out of shirts they forgot to do while they were home, tying each other's shoelaces when the others fingers fumbled and their eyes darted, brushing hair they couldn't reach, sharing safe snacks when the school food was too much, gushing about topics the other had no interest in but still listening intently, picking flowers, naming trees. Had it been anyone else. It could never be anyone else, she realised.
