Pat pulled a twig off the branch above him. He swung on of his legs over the branch he was sat on and started shredding leaves off the twig. If he was anything today, he was bored. Very, incredibly bored.
He'd thought... Pat didn't honestly know what he'd thought. He'd made up an excuse to go walking and was now sat in a tree, swinging his legs, with a letter tucked in his pocket. He took the letter everywhere, in case he ran into-
Pat blinked and looked down. He thought he'd heard horse hooves. Well, a single horse. Horse hoof? Would that be a unicycle horse?
Pat leaned over more to try and see who it was. He lost his grip on the branch and nearly toppled out of the tree. In his scrambling to get back on the branch, he dropped the twig.
"Ow!"
Pat winced guiltily and scrambled down the tree. "Sorry, I didn't see you there-"
There was a small huff of air that could've been a laugh. "Clearly." Logan said, rubbing his head a little and smiling.
Pat stared at Logan, his open mouth slowly turning up into a smile. "Lo!" He practically screamed, rushing forward and tackling Logan in a hug.
Logan laughed, stumbling and trying to keep himself upright. "You act like you haven't seen me in years." He still hugged Pat back with a ferocious tightness that he planned to never tell anyone about. Ever.
"Well, I thought I'd never see you again and it'd be all my fault and I missed you and I was worried and all that." Pat mumbled, burying his head in Logan's shoulder. Logan laughed a little brokenly.
"It's not your fault, Pat." He muttered. "Not at all. It's my stupid brother's fault for sticking his humongous nose in my business."
Pat laughed. He pulled back slightly, so he could look at Logan properly. "But what are you doing here?" He asked. "I thought I'd never see you again, that you wouldn't be allowed down here for years, if ever."
"I thought the same." Logan laughed like he could barely believe it and cupped Pat's face. "He promised he wouldn't tell father."
"Seriously?"
Logan nodded. "He promise that as long as I didn't muck this up anymore, he wouldn't tell father." Logan let an almost hopeful laugh escape him. "Pat, we're safe!"
Pat hugged him again, somehow even tighter than before. Logan felt like all the air had been squeezed out of him. Not exactly like he minded, though.
"Oh! Before I forget," Pat wriggled away and pulled a crumpled, folded piece of paper out of his pocket. He handed it to Logan. "It's for you!"
Logan glanced up at Pat and pushed his glasses up his nose before opening the paper. It was a letter.
"I thought, in case something does happen, you'll be able to read my words and hopefully, you won't forget me." Pat explained, rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet. "You know, if you do have to marry your betrothed or something else happens that just means we can't meet up anymore... You could at least remember me, right?"
"Pat..." Logan didn't even know how to begin to explain. He couldn't find the words. "Pat, as if I could ever forget you..." He folded the letter gently and pressed a small kiss to it. He slipped it in his waistcoat pocket.
"Do you have to be home soon?" He asked. Pat shook his head.
"Do you?" Logan shook his head. "We've got about an hour before my dads'll start to worry. So..." Pat took Logan's hand. "D'you wanna go skip stones in the stream? I think I've got it now."
Logan couldn't help the fond smile that spread across his face. He gave Pat's hand a squeeze.
"Of course."
I hate everything about this chapter. Have fun, ig
