Logan followed Virgil in silence through the castle. Normally, he would've tried to say something, tried to cut the silence with anything he had to hand, but there was something about Virgil that silenced everything he tried to say.

He was afraid, Logan realised, of Virgil. More afraid than he had been of the sorcerer. Why?

Logan marked down a tapestry in his head. If he was going to get out of here again with Patton, he'd need to find his way through this labyrinth.

Why did castles need to be so complicated, anyway? What was the point?

Logan swallowed. "Where are we going?" He tried, his voice coming out painfully small. Virgil glanced back at him and there was such worry in his eyes that it nearly dissolved the knot of fear in Logan's chest.

"Patton's at the top of the tallest tower." He said, turning back around. "I should know. You're going up there."

"Me?!" Logan repeated. "Are you not coming too?"

"Can't bear to face it." Virgil admitted candidly. He cleared his throat and sped up slightly. "Come on, now's not the time for talk."

"Don't I know it." Logan broke into a small jog to catch up with Virgil. Still, he fell back to walking a step or two behind. Despite how human Virgil seemed, Logan was still afraid of him.

After a moment's hesitation, Logan couldn't help the question that sprung to his mind. "Is it true, what the sorcerer said? If Pat doesn't wake up, he's going to forget everything?"

Virgil stalled. It was only for a step but he definitely faltered.

"I wouldn't put it past Janus." He said. His voice sounded strangled. He stopped so suddenly Logan nearly walked into him. Virgil turned around to glare at Logan. "So you'd better do something about this, your Highness." He poked an accusing finger at Logan. "Because if Patton really does forget everything when you could've done something, I swear-" Virgil trailed off and looked away. "I swear, you won't live to mend it."

Yep, Logan was very scared of Virgil.

"Understood." Logan stammered.

Virgil nodded. It seemed like a bit of an anti-climax. "Good." He said shortly. "Come on."

Virgil stopped outside an old door. He gestured upwards.

"Keep going up til you reach the top." He said. Logan hesitated and then pushed the door open.

The tower was very light, despite the weak sunlight seeping through the windows. From the looks of things, clouds were gathering over the top of the hill.

Logan glanced back at Virgil. Virgil nodded his head towards the stairs. Logan took a breath and stepped into the tower.

"Don't be too long." Virgil said. "For all our sakes."

Logan nodded. As he looked, Virgil's image seemed to fade into a flash of purple sparks and then nothing.

Logan was all alone. Again.

He took a breath and grabbed the banister along the wall. The same unwelcome image the sorcerer had shown him came back to his mind again. What if he couldn't do it? What if he wasn't what Patton needed, what he wanted?

Logan stepped up onto the first step and looked behind him. There was still no one there.

He looked up the winding staircase. "Pat?" He called out softly. His voice echoed off the walls, bouncing back and mocking him. He swallowed.

He stepped up onto the second step and a flash of a nightmare from years ago came back to him. Someone in his castle, looking for him. Someone with desperate, burning scars on his face.

Logan started to run up the stairs, taking two at a time. His chest was burning before he'd even reached the first landing but he kept going.

"Pat?!" He called out, his voice breathless and barely carrying any weight at all. "Pat?!"

His head shot to the side as he ran past the first landing. He was half way up the stairs when he stopped.

There had been someone in that room.

Slowly, carefully, Logan turned back around. Catching his breath, he made his way back down the ten steps he'd gotten to.

Ten, nine, eight-

What if it had just been a trick of the light?

Seven, six, five, four-

It hadn't been. Logan may be desperate but he wasn't at the point of hallucinations.

Three, two, one.

Logan was stood on the landing now. He could just see the figure, tucked under the blankets of the bed. Gripping his jacket, he took a breath and stepped into the room.

Patton.

Outside, it started to rain.
