Gentle rain pattering against the window of his apartment was the first thing Law perceived when waking up this morning. It was the first in a long time that he was allowed to sleep in instead of having to get up early to work in the local hospital. He was a doctor, specialist on everything involving the heart from examination to surgery and despite his young age one of the leading experts in this topic. But with this position came a lot of responsibility and even more work. Not that he minded his work itself. It was just that so many other things were coming way too short.
Like Yua.
Still sleepy, he reached out and had to smile when feeling the familiar warm body beside him. Without opening his eyes, he slid closer and carefully to not wake her, he wrapped his arm around her. His nose hidden in her hair, he took a deep and felt himself relax. Moments like this were rare.
Too rare.
He had met Yua when visiting a small art exhibition after a painting of the artist had been hung up in the hospital's lunchroom. He never had been one interested in stuff like that but something about this work had spoken to him. That way, he had landed on the show, actually to maybe get one of the artworks himself but what he had taken with him that night had been the artist.
This beautiful and smart, yet slightly dreamy woman had captured him, just as she had been amazed by the charming and intelligent surgeon.
For almost three years they were a couple by now and for about one, she was living with him in his apartment but with his growing demand, he was able to spend less and less at home. There always was the next surgery, the next important case, the next who knows what.Just when the embrace of sleep almost had taken a hold of him once again, his phone vibrated on the nightstand. Instantly on high alert, he quickly sat up and grabbed that damn device before it would wake up Yua. He knew already who was calling anyway. It wasn't that he had many other contacts than the woman laying beside him and none of them would try to reach him at that time.
"What?", he pressed out between clenched teeth, only to hear the annoying laugh of his boss "Fufufufufu. Good to hear that you are already up, Law. I was worried that I might wake you" which surely was the last thing that he was, and Law did not only knew this from the mocking tone in his voice but after not receiving any kind of reply, he went one undismayed went on "I have something interesting for you on my table" "It is my day off", a single day after working almost nonstop for weeks. "Guess that's cancelled", he hummed uncaring, and Law faintly was able to hear the rustling of papers "The police union president Akainu has announced his visit today to have his heart checked and I want that an influential man like him to be treated by our best specialist". Which meant that the highest fees could be postulated, which was the actual reason that he once again was called. This and the hospital's reputation. His boss only was interested in the wellbeing of his patients as far as that he wanted good publicity. Good publicity brings new customer and customers, especially the rich and famous, that leave his clinic well treated bring good publicity. It was the perfect system that Law felt more and more trapped within.
Of course, he wanted to make a good job and he was proud about the things that he was able to do but with every step up the ladder of success, he was moving further away from the one thing that was really important to him.
