Y/N POV
We rushed to the hospital as soon as we heard the news. We had brought everything that our friends had dropped off to give Miguel when he woke up. "And this is from your pale friend. Demetri, is it? He said the plastic isn't UV resistant, so don't leave it near the window," Mom told him. "K," He answers quietly. I grab his hand and he gives me a soft smile, assuring me that he's ok. I return one as Mom points to a basket, "And that basket is from the LaRussos." Miguel sighs heavily and tries to say something. Mom urges him to not strain himself, "No, no, no, don't... What is it, Miggy? What do you need?" He makes a w sound and Mom asks, "Water?" "Where's sensei?" He asks. I glance between him and Mom. She meets my gaze and looks back down at Miguel. "Y/N, where is he?" He says quietly. I just sigh and look to Mom for help. She doesn't say anything, but we were saved when the doctor walked in to check on Miguel.
"You're progressing nicely. How does this feel?" He asks moving his arm around. "Yeah," He says. "Yeah? What about this?" He asks moving his fingers. "Normal," He says. "Great," He says before moving to his leg. "Yaya's so excited. She's at home cooking up a storm," Mom says. "Yeah, the tupperwares full of dulce de leche," I add with a smile. "That's great, guys," Miguel says while Mom continues to feed him. "What about this?" The doctor asks moving his foot. He shakes his head and says, "No." "How about this?" The doctor asks poking his foot with a pen. "No." He says. "That's...That's ok," he says. "You said the scans were ok, right?" Mom asks. "Yes. Yes." "Am I gonna be able to do karate again?" I look hopefully at the doctor. This feels like some sort of sick joke. Like the universe has it out for us or something. We finally get everything we've ever wanted, and then it's ripped away in an instant. I may be able to do karate, but I don't know if I could do that to Miguel. How could I do it without him, when we started this together. "One day at a time. I'm gonna borrow your mom for a second, ok?" The doctor says. We both nod and Mom turns the TV on for Miguel and I. "I think the Dodgers played last night," I say. They walk out of the room and Miguel and I watch through the window. It seems fine until Mom starts to look really upset. She starts crying and covers her mouth as if she couldn't believe what the doctor said. I grab Miguel's hand tightly as my own shakes. I can't believe this. Miguel probably won't ever walk again. He looks down at his legs as I stand up and go into the hall. I go to the bathroom and sit in the stall, tears streaming down my face. I wasn't crying, there were only silent tears falling. I tried to call Hawk, but it went to voicemail. I gripped my phone tightly as the silent tears continued to fall.
When the tears stopped falling, I splashed my face with water and went back to Miguel's room. Mom said that she was going to go home, but I asked her to stay for a little bit. She agreed and left, telling me she would come get me later. Miguel and I sat in his room in an uncomfortable silence as he picked at the hospital food. I see movement out of the corner of my eye and turn to look at who it is. "Hey," Sensei says as Miguel and I look at him. "Hey," Miguel says quietly. "I, uh...keep having to sneak in here. I kept it from last time I was here," he says showing us his wrist band. "What happened to your face?" I ask. "I got in a fight with a paper towel dispenser. And a couple goons at a chop shop. You got rid of that neck brace thing, that's good. I always thought head gear was for nerds," He says. I mentally facepalm at his ludicrous attempt to make Miguel feel better. There was a long pause before Miguel finally tells him, "The doctor told my Mom I might not walk again." I clench my fists trying to stop them from shaking. "What? No. They can't know that. Nah, they don't know how strong you are," he says not believing what Miguel told him. "Sensei...I did what you taught me. I showed mercy. Why did this happen to me?" Struggling to find an answer, all sensei can come up with is, "I don't know." "You don't know?" I ask in an accusatory tone. Tears stared to form, but this time they wouldn't be silent, I knew that much. "We trusted you. We did everything you told us," he said. "Miguel, Y/N...I-" "Look at us!" I cut him off. I slightly lift my shirt to show the four long cuts that hadn't healed yet from Tory's bracelet. "Get out of here," Miguel says as we both finally let our tears fall. "Miguel, Y/N, you can't-" "Just get out of here! Please! Just leave," He sobs as Johnny leaves the room. I hug him gently in fear that I might hurt him. But he tugs me closer and we both sob into each other's shoulders as I lay next to him. Oh how cruel the world can be.
