Spoiler warning???

You were the captain of the Invincible ii, the second spaceship your head engineer Mark built. You and the crew were traveling to find a new habitable planet. Your crew was everything to you. You loved them. They did everything you asked of them. They weren't perfect...of course, but they were yours. With all of this, what more could you want?

Mark. You wanted to be with Mark. You knew it was crazy to have a crush on a coworker, ESPECIALLY one that you basically live with. He was just so kind. He was stupid but kind. He put you first. He would always greet you with the warmest smile. He was also stunning, to say the least.

"Mark!" You heard Celci yell from across the room, "What did you do to MY cryo-chamber!"

"Oh! I meant to tell you about that!! You see, I added a couple of upgrades-"

"I swear to god, everything was FINE, Mark!! The colonists in the cryopods are overheating! I can't turn the temperature down and I'm not sure if you know this, if we don't keep our colonists under negative thirty-two degrees Fahrenheit, they won't survive the fast travel!"

"HEY! My upgrades had nothing to do with the temperature control! I simply corrected the error in the temperature recording SYSTEM. That is completely separate from the temperature control panel entirely."

You listened to Mark and Celci bicker back and forth for quite a long time. You stopped paying attention after a while. You tuned them out until you had the passing thought

Not my circus, not my monkeys.

That was when it occurred to you that this, in fact, was your circus and these certainly were your monkeys.

"Guys..." You squeaked out, only for nobody to hear.

You tried to speak again, "Guys!" They didn't hear you. You resorted to stepping between the two of them. They both stopped and looked at you with quizzical expressions.

"Captain?" Mark asked.

"Look what you did, you made them angry." Celci began.

You quickly interrupted her, "No, no. I'm not mad. I'm irritated. There is no reason for you to burst in here like that, Celci. Mark, please go check the issue out in cryo."

Mark put on a pouty face, "But she-"

"Go! Now!"

Celci crossed her arms and smirked as you walked with Mark to Cryo. Mark silently handed you a coat that was hanging outside of cryo. You took it gingerly, trying to hide the giddy schoolgirl excitement it brought you. You slipped on your coat and trailed after him. The room was full of cryogenic gas. It was frigid in there, to say the least. Mark got on the floor under the main console. He began fiddling around with wires whilst muttering various profanities and complaints. You got on the ground with him and looked at the wirework. You had a basic knowledge of electricity so you had an idea of what Mark was doing. You scanned over the colored wires carefully in an attempt to help Mark.

"I don't know if you know. Of course, I know CELCI I'm not that stupid." Mark muttered, "There's nothing wrong here I swear. I didn't do this. This is-"

You placed a hand on his shoulder gently cutting off his sentence.

"Oh no..." Mark began. "I'm so sorry captain. I got carried away. She just gets so loud and...mean, ya know?"

You nodded and gestured up to the wires. "Let's take a look at these just in case. If we find nothing wrong with the upgrade, we'll report back to Celci."

Mark smiled at you with that goofy toothy grin. This smile was kind, warm even. This smile was burned into your retinas like an old film. All of the times he smiled at you were recorded over each other creating the perfect memory. You felt the heat rise to your cheeks as you admired the way the corners of his eyes crinkled or how his smile wasn't exactly even. You loved it.

"Captain?" Mark said. You did it again. You were staring. You simply looked back at the wires in an attempt to forget what just happened. As you did, you saw one strange wire sequence. The normal arrangement of colors was green, yellow, and blue. These wires were yellow, green, and blue.

"Hey Mark, are these wires tied wrong?" You asked, grabbing the bundle carefully.

"What-OH! Captain! You're a genius!" Mark scrambled to get where you were. You quickly moved out of his way as he took the wires apart from each other.

"Of course! The wires are connected in the wrong order! They would cause the recording system to alter the central temperature control because the ship thinks that it's cooling them off when it's actually heating them up!"

You loved to watch him succeed. You loved to see him happy. You wanted to kiss him so badly at that moment. Alas, you both got up from the cryo floor, the room now getting even colder. You looked up at Mark.

"I'm proud of you, Mark." You watched the heat rise to his face. You weren't sure if it was because he was laying on the ground for so long or if it was from how cold it was, but it was cute to see regardless. "You owe Celci an apology though. She may have yelled at you but you didn't try to hear what she had to say. You both were in the wrong, but I think she'll apologize too."

Mark groaned loudly as he walked over to the cryo door.

"I hope you're right, captain," Mark said quietly. With that, he was gone.

Maybe you should have kissed him.
