"November." Andrea says quietly. I jump when I see her crouching next to me on the floor. "You need to get going."
"Why?" I complain, pulling the covers over me and curling up on the carpet.
"If you want to get out of here as quickly as possible then no one can no about your little... Um.... You leaving the room yesterday."
I sigh and get up slowly. I close the door gently behind me as I traipse back to my room. Its only 7 so Leah is still sleeping. Taking this opportunity I manage to get dressed in peace and go down to breakfast. With my plate of toast and scrambled eggs which I won't eat because I don't like eggs. I sit at the same table I sat at with the boy but alone this time. I chew on the toast as Andrea bounces towards me, those signature patient heels clicking.
"Good news!" She chirps.
"Yeah, what?" I reply, still half asleep.
"I just spoke to someone and guess who gets to miss first and second period to come here?"
"Leo?!" I put the toast down.
"Yep, so you better behave yourself."
"When?"
"He said he's on his way." I stand up. "Wait." I hault. "I just wanted to ask if you we're okay after yesterday?"
"Yes," The eagerness to see Leo diminishes.
"What freaked you out so much?" I shrug. She shakes her head, "you never give me a straight answer do you?" I stare at the half eaten piece of cold toast. "Anyway, come on I'll take you to visitors area." So I follow her and she directs me to seat. "Stay here."
"Why can't I-"
"You're not allowed through those doors," she points to a set of glass double doors. She hesitates before passing through the doors that I must not step beyond. I not allowed though those doors? I'm too crazy to go beyond a set of doors that aren't even locked. I'm not allowed back into the world. It sort of reminds me of when Leo, Mum and I went to Spain and it was the first time I'd been on a plane. I remember flashing my passport as we walked through a barrier and suddenly I was in a place that was technically not anything. A place where people go through to get to somewhere else. Like this place, It's not anything, people come here only to beg to get out again. But then again, Leo always did say I had a strange way of looking at things.
"I brought some stuff for her." Faint voices draw closer.
"That's great, but we'll have to get it checked first."
"Checked?"
"Yes, so you know she doesn't try to..... hurt herself with it."
"Oh."
"Um, Leo," Andrea suddenly whispers. "Remember what I said."
"I know," Leo also whispers in response.
The doors swing open.
"Hi," Leo smiles awkwardly. His hair is neatly gelled away from his eyes and I can see his black school trousers underneath his jacket.
"Hi," I sigh. I look at Andrea and she takes the hint and scurries off somewhere.
"I doesn't look so bad," Leo tries.
"It's fucking horrible," I mutter.
"Well, can I see your room?"
"Yeah, sure." I take Leo up the stairs to my room. I open the door to find Leah brushing her teeth in our single sink on the far wall. She spits out her toothpaste.
"Who's this?" Leah raises an eyebrow.
"Um, my brother, Leo," I mumble.
"Christ, what went wrong with you November," she winks and I cringe as her shoulder brushes mine on her away out.
"Well, she's.... nice," Leo tried to be positive.
"She's annoying," I say flatly.
"Your rooms not to bad."
"No," I walk over and pick up the CD on my bed. "Did you make this?" I ask.
He shakes his head, "Esmé did. You like it?" I nod and Leo just looks at me with deep pity.
"Oh, for fucks sake," I bury my fingers in my hair so my palms touch my head.
"What?"
"Stop looking at me like I'm completely insane," I go to walk out but Leo grabs my arm tightly. Everything closes in. If it had been anyone other than Leo they would have gotten a punch in the jaw, but it is Leo. "Don't." He lets go. I glare at him before walking quickly off down the maze of corridors. My mind is racing in anger when a young man blocks my path.
"I haven't seen you around," he states. "You must be November. I'm Mike or 'Dr Stephenson' as I'm refered to. Apparently you refused to come and see me yesterday."
"Pretty much," my voices fizzes with annoyance.
"Are you coming to group session today?"
"I don't want to."
"It's not as bad as it sounds, trust me," He smiles as Leo jogs up to us.
"You can't just run off," Leo scowls.
"See you later then," Dr Stephenson or 'Mike' walks off.
"Look November, I'm sorry, I just, if you want me to be completely honest, I don't even know how to act around you anymore."
Do you ever get a twinge just beneath your heart? When something in your head hurts so much your body feels it to. And for a split second you feel like your falling as your eyes fill with tears and your hands begin shake.
My voice fights through the lump in my throat, "just act normally, Leo, I'm still the same person."
