Chapter Ten: Job Hunt!

I felt completely useless. Maybe useless isn't the right word seeing as I'm still capable of functioning properly—I think the right word would be utterly impoverished by doing nothing. I have been sitting around all week like a couch potato, no job, no nothing. Heck I haven't even stepped out of my house. I need to find something to do, maybe a job.

I got ready, had on a jean and white tee. I opted out my infamous heels for high tops and pulled my hair into a ponytail, there I looked presentable. I went downstairs and found my grandma Adesua in the couch knitting. She loves knitting, maybe I should get her to knit me a sweater. I walked up to her.

"What are you knitting granny?"I asked. She looked up to acknowledge me and pursed her lips.

"A sweater for Delilah, and where do you think you're going?" She inquired. I couldn't tell her I was looking for a job at least not until I'd found a good one.

"Actually I'm just going out with Stacey, been a long time and I wanted to see how Oakland looks like again." I said and prayed she would just let me go and not ask any questions.

"Why decide to go now?" She asked. Oh granny always the detective.

"Well granny I'm tired of sitting at home all day doing absolutely nothing". I told her. She hummed and went on with her knitting. Okay. I stood there awkwardly not knowing what to do because I dare not leave without her permission.

"You know, you could always help with the cooking and chores instead of going out." She finally uttered. It's not like I didn't help with chores. I do. She just doesn't want me to go out.

"Oh my sweet lovely granny, I just want to see my hometown. I'll be back in the next two hours, please I promise and I'll buy you something on my way." I begged her. The only way to mollify her is to sweet talk her.

"Fine be back in the next one hour." She agreed. I hugged her and gave her a kiss on the cheek with a smacking sound.

"Thank you so much granny, I love you." I said to her.

"Leave before I change my mind." She shooed me but I caught a small smile on her lips. I think all she needs is love and appreciation and it won't be at all bad to give it to her.

When I stepped outside, a nostalgic feeling came over me. How I've actually missed Oakland, looking at it, it's way different than the scenario back in New York—it's feels more peaceful. We live around town so it took about a ten minute walk to get to the main town. I walked down the streets the bright morning sun shining, bikers racing down the streets, flower shops were everywhere and old couples taking a stroll.

               I miss this.

I first went to an aged community center in search of a job and...let's just say it didn't work out.

"Well ma'am you do know the work you do here is a volunteer work which means you don't get paid. And we only take high schoolers and college students. Although I can make an exception for you if you'd like a paying job, but you'll have to volunteer for a year straight." No thank you, I need to earn money ASAP.

I then went on to a clothing store, Sadya Boutique. I was downright rejected and insulted.

"You are not fashion inspiration, when I look at you I don't feel inspired you know. No hard feelings but you have a bland dressing but I do love your curls, so long and black. I don't want you scaring my customers, so sorry". She was selling clothes not a renowned fashion designer for Pete's sake.
