Ryder.
Crap. What am I supposed to do now?
Benson may be about to ask Macyn out this very minute.
I had just put the guitar back on its stand, ready to catch up with Macyn and walk with her to class.
That's when I see her run into him.
Before either of them see me, I quickly dive back behind the Drama Department door to listen in on their conversation:
"I'm okay!"
I hear Benson laugh nervously and scuff around.
"I've uh, been sort of looking for you. I, well... I wanted to ask you something," he manages to spit out.
"Oh yeah? What's up?"
All air manages to escape my lungs.
I don't think I've felt this panicked in a long time.
He's really gonna ask her!
I have to stop this.
I need to prevent this.
But... I can't, can I?
After all, I was the one who encouraged this from the start.
And Bens's been in love with her for who knows how long...
But, he heard what happened in the auditorium.
Why is making a move on her now, after what she said?
None of this makes sense.
She still loves me, I know she does... Right?
I have to believe that.
Yet here I am, hiding behind a door, torn between wanting her for me, or letting the other guy win the girl of every other sane guy's dreams.
Curiosity gets the best of me, so I listen to see if he'll actually go through with it, carefully peering around the door to watch their reactions.
"Well, um, we've known each other for a long time..."
"Yes we have. But, that's not exactly a question, silly."
"Oh. Uh, yeah, right," he scratches his head nervously, staring intently at the ground, "I was kind of wondering, that um, maybe y-you, um..."
"Maybe I...? What?"
The suspense is killing me. And Macyn too, apparently.
Benson inhales a shaky breath, and tries to continue.
"Look, I... I heard what you said back there. Well, some of it-"
"Bens, I didn't mean for anyone else to hear that," Macyn interrupts, "I promise I'm not a heartless bitch, honest! You know me."
He breathes out a nervous laugh.
"Yeah, I do. We've gotten pretty close the past few years. A-and, I mean, I think you know me pretty well, too."
"I practically live with you, so yeah."
She giggles."I'm not Ryder, Mace. "
Their tone becomes more serious again. Macyn gives his arm a reassuring squeeze.
"I know you're not. Far from it, honestly."
I humorously chuckle under my breath at this statement, slightly insulted.
