Just as Chad told me, a couple minutes later we are pulling into town. Looking around, I notice there is one main street with shops along it, and smaller roads branching off it with other main stores along it. Everywhere I look there are kids, teenagers, and adults walking around with a cowboy hat and boots on. They all look like they belong in the country and not the city.
Parking the truck, I watch as Chad gets out and shuts the door. He stands by the front of the truck waiting for me to get out as well. Sighing, I undo my seatbelt and climb out, slowly making my way towards Chad. He just looks at me before walking off towards a store. I follow him inside and as soon as I step through the door, the smell of animal foot wafts up my nose.
“Oh, hi, Chad, I didn’t know you were coming in today,” I hear someone say to Chad.
“I know but Marley needed food for the horses so he sent me in to town with his niece,” Chad replies as I walk to his side and stand there with my arms crossed.
“I didn’t know he had a niece,” the girl says again. I look up to see a girl about my age with long, curly blonde hair, electric blue eyes and freckles across her nose and cheeks. “Hi, I’m Alexandra.” The girl sticks her hand out and I look at it before shaking it.
“Dylan,” I say back to her.
“Anyways, we will just got around back and pick up the grains,” Chad tells her as he eyes me.
“Oh, okay, see you later. Don’t forget about the bonfire tonight over at Maclean’s.” Alexandra calls to us.
“I won’t, see you then!” Chad smiles at her before continuing to walk towards the back to get the horse food.
I follow him out back and just stand beside the truck as he hauls bags of horse food into the back of it. He huffs and puffs as the bags become heavier and bigger. By the time the bags of food are in the truck, there is sweat along his forehead and small sweat stains on his shirt.
“You could have helped,” Chad huffs as he sits in the truck, blasting cool air towards himself.
“Yeah, I could have, but it was funner watching you do it.”
Chad just rolls his eyes at me as he pulls out of the spot and heads towards my uncles farm. “So, I know you’re not very social, but want to go to the bonfire tonight?” Chad asks me oh-so-casually.
“I am so sociable,” I argue as I glare at him. “But sure, I guess I can go, maybe I’ll meet some cool people, unlike you.”
“Well it starts at 8 so be ready at 7 and I am the coolest person alive.”
I burst out laughing and he just looks at me. “HA! I almost started to believe you for a minute there.”
“You’re a funny one,” Chad points out as he turns on the radio again.
“Turn that shit off,” I yell at him as I reach over to turn it off but he slaps my hand away.
“Never,” Chad laughs as he turns it up even louder. I slouch down in my seat and cross my arms over my chest as Chad belts out every song.
As soon as Chad pulls into the driveway, I am already undoing my seatbelt and pulling the handle to the door. He parks the truck and I immediately push open the door without a second to spare. Chad just laughs at me as I try to get as far away from the country music as I could seeing as it was still blaring from the speakers of his truck.
I glance at the clock hanging above the front door and notice it is only three in the afternoon. Sighing, I walk over to the pen where Scar is running back and forth. I just lean up against the fence watching him run. I am so mesmerised by his grace and beauty, I barely notice when he starts to run towards the fence in my direction. I finally notice when he is only strides away from me.
