5/25/22 A/N:

This is not a continuation of the previous chapter, so feel free to disregard this. I am still editing and this will majorly change, though I intend to keep some parts (hence why I have not deleted this piece entirely).

I am sorry for any confusion this weird break causes. The 'new piece of story' actually started before this part but I will be majorly editing from this chapter forward.

Thanks a lot to anyone who reads this! :) I will try my best to make what I do as good as I can from here on out. I really think the changes will make this story better. : )

IN THE OLD OFFICE:

Two Alteans sit comfortably in the king's old work room with the Black Paladin. It is technically now the princess's workroom, but neither Coran or Allura had the heart to change it.

It is a huge, spacious room covered with tables and chairs. In the middle of the room, there was a circular desk covered with now familiar files, and cushioned benches surrounding it.

Opening the files, Coran continues scribing over the results of the exams with Allura beside him, overseeing. She sat comfortably with a cup of tea. Shiro sat across from them with a cup of hot water.

The impromptu 'leaders' and 'adults' of the team had decided they would meet every now and then in this room to discuss anything pertaining to the team that not all paladins had business in hearing. It was Coran's idea, and so far had been very helpful. It was typically run by Allura, as most things were.

"Just finishing up." Coran says, not looking up from his writing. "We have all the necessary information, for the most part. We covered the physical aspect of it, as I was telling you earlier." Allura says, still holding her tea. A few moments roll by.

"All done!" Coran's happy voice fills the air, "Now, we will need the psychological evaluations next." Coran says to both Shiro and Princess Allura. Shiro approaches the subject cautiously, "Mental evaluations? What exactly do you mean, Coran?"

"Well, King Alfor conducted a series of tests before deciding who would try to bond with the lions. These included a mental one." Shiro leans forward and listens attentively as Coran carries on, sitting back against the cushions.

"From what I've gathered, and there isn't much record of it, the King had a number of candidates from which to form the paladins of Voltron. The psychological evaluations were administered through a serum, which made up the test for evaluation. King Alfor reviewed the results as they went."

"What do you mean serum? Is it some kind of hallucinogen?" Shiro asks, cautious. He had a bad history with those.

"I thought it involved Altean magic?" Allura asks suddenly, perplexed. She'd never heard about these tests directly, but there had been rumors about her father testing the original paladins. Rumor was only an Altean with a king's level of magic could administer them.

"It's a little bit of both, Princess. The serum allowed their nervous system to disconnect from their muscles, almost as if they were asleep, so whatever motion they would do in the 'field' they wouldn't act out in real life. Luckily all the candidates had a system that worked with it- and it just so happens that it is compatible with the human body's nervous system as well."

Shiro and Allura nod their heads, listening.

"As for the magic part," he continues, his fair face looking a little more apprehensive, "It powers the machine that creates the 'field'. So, each candidate would lay down and inhale the serum- the serum is changed into a gaseous form- and there is a machine that resembles a head piece. King Alfor, or in this case Princess Allura, powers the piece and shows their minds a reality. There is the 'field' where the test takes place."
